What does "killer" mean? Do you mean it kills your chances of being admitted or is it some kind of slang meaning that it pushes you to the top?

Being a published short story writer will not impress anyone.

Grades and scores being equal, I've seen great respect for military service members, professional athletes, and Olympians. All easier said than done.

Killer, huh?

Yes, I respect the first responders and military/veterans if you want exemplary ECs.

Let's add:

Peace Corps
Teach for America
>500 hrs of service to others less fortunate than one's self
For the research wh0res, multiple publications and/or national conferences.

Writing is generally considered a hobby. Even if your stories were published in the New Yorker, it isn’t killer. It would take an honor on the level of Booker or Pulitzer to be considered significant.

Everyone I know who had military experience or was a rhodes scholar basically got in everywhere they applied (with tons of scholarships thrown their way). Granted this number isn’t a lot since these are incredibly rare
