What are loans and where can I find the best information???

Hello,
I don't know too much about loans except that you need to pay the loaner back after a period of time. Is there some sort of universal guide that explains everything I need to know about loans? I don't like the pamphlets because they're too simplistic, and I feel bankers don't tell the truth about loans when you ask them. Please help me with this and have a great Independence day.
