  • Oklahoma resident - hoping to apply to OSU-COM and a few other schools.
  • AACOMAS GPA: 3.44 cumulative - 3.26 science, 3.66 non-science (NOTE: I retook a 3 credit science course - D first time, B second time)
  • MCAT: 27 (8 PS, 10 VR, 9 BS) on 7/26/2013
  • I have about 75-100 hours of clinical volunteer work. Most of it is during a 1-1.5 year span and involved triage (interacting with patients, taking vitals, and filling prescriptions in a low income area of my city).
  • No research or shadowing/not much nonclinical volunteering
  • Just started a full-time job this week as a forensic LC/MS operator in a lab. Basically I prepare urine samples for drug testing using a liquid chromatograph/mass spectrometer, operate the LC/MS, and also analyze/verify results. During undergrad I worked an IT job at my school from 8/2008 to 5/2013, with a promotion in May 2012. Worked ~25 hours/week during school, ~35-39 hours/week during summer/winter.
  • LORs from Pre-Med Committee, 1 science professor, and my physician/close family friend (DO).

I have my AACOMAS almost filled out. I need to go over my personal statement a little bit before I send it out. Given this information, what schools do you guys suggest I apply to?

it's really scary that you're applying with like 2 EC activities and average stats. I really recommend waiting a year if I were you so that I wouldn't be labeled as a reapplicant..

Although tqraq is right your ECs are weak, his recommendation is not bad, it is absolutely terrible and shortsighted. You go ahead and apply broadly now, beef up your ECs every day and update in AACOMAS in a month. Hope for the best. If you happen to reapply, it's not like schools will avoid you like the plague or anything, too many student reapply for that matter.

Nice job with the terrible advice. You're either a troll or a complete *****.

OP, you should be fine. The only thing that isn't good about your application is that you haven't formally shadowed a doc. I suggest you apply, and try to find someone (a DO, preferably) to shadow in the meantime.

How is that terrible advice? How would the admissions committee know that OP wants to become a doctor without shadowing or even willing to dedicate his/her life in serving others without showing it? They want to actually see that you're committed in serving others. My friend with much more stellar stats (36 MCAT and 3.7 gpa) and limited ECs including few volunteer hours and no shadowing experience applied to 27 MD schools and received no interviews. Granted that he applied to allopathic schools, it still demonstrates how important ECs are and you would want to maximize your chance even if it takes another year to boost up your application.

OP, if you're trying to get into this cycle, apply broadly and your MCAT is right about average for OSU but your GPA is less than average(theirs is 3.6 c/sgpa). you might get an interview granted that you write a good personal statement. Try finding a DO to shadow in the meantime since you'll have plenty of time until your interview (if you receive one).

I thought shadowing was a must... OP should try to get at least 30 hours shadowing... Other than that, OP is good for most DO.
