It will be an uphill battle but its definitely possible. You should make sure that you put your best efforts into your PS and secondary essays. I would apply broadly and to as many schools out of CA as possible. The CA schools tend to be more selective than other state MD schools. Ideally you should apply to around 20-25 schools based on your stats/EC's. I hope this helps.

Agree with winter. And I'd go so far as to suggest applying to 30 schools based on your CA residency and your low science gpa (a strong upward trend and good grades in the pre-reqs will help). The more broadly you apply the better, and better to apply really broadly than have to reapply. The other thing I'd suggest is to take some upper level science courses ASAP (either this summer or in the fall) and send your grades as an update letter to all the schools you apply to once you receive those grades. Oh, and include RFU in your applications. Good luck.

Great. Thanks for the comments. I guess I'll need to borrow some money in order to apply to that many schools.

What are the rules for sending in updates? Can you send a letter to any school that receives your secondary? Or do you need to have interviewed and be on the waitlist?? Also, if you are sending in grades, does this mean that you send in an official transcript as well as a letter explaining that you want to update them on grades since so-and-so?

Thanks

There are no rules for updates. You can send them to any school you applied to, at any time, with anything you like. You could send a new LOR, information about a new EC, a publication, grades (official transcript is probably best), etc.
