Hello! I think this is my second time posting it here, but I have some new updates and worried to death that I might not be able to get into a medical school.
Age: turning 23 this year
MCAT: 504 (126/124/127/127)
cGPA: 3.945 sGPA: 3.984
Ethnicity: Asian (Green card holder)
State of residency: Colorado
EC: I worked as a Teaching Assistant for 2 semesters, currently doing a research program with university hospital at Emergency Department. I got on the Dean's list (university honors) almost every semester.
Volunteer: I have none, but I am not planning to apply this cycle but the next one and therefore I will start next semester.
Shadowing: Same story with volunteer work. But recently I did shadowing for family medicine doctor for 8 hours! Hopefully he introduces me to other doctors.
I know its an excuse but I have been working at school for 3 years in a row so I didn't have a lot of time to do volunteers and stuff (not good with multitasking either) but hoping to fill up the requirements by next semester.
I know my chances of getting into MD program is low, so I am looking mainly for DO schools. I was wondering if my stats (at least what I have) is competitive for DO schools and if they are, could you let me know which ones? I want to stay in my state but if I have to go out of state, I really don't mind. I mainly want to know if I can for sure get into a DO school or an MD school next cycle if I work on my extracurricular activities!

Thank you!

You need 50 hours of physician shadowing, including primary care, before you apply. Also accumulate 200+ hours of clinical volunteering with patient contact before you apply.
I suggest these DO schools with your stats:
Western
TUCOM-CA
TUNCOM
AZCOM
RVUCOM
BCOM
UIWSOM
CCOM
DMU-COM
KCU-COM
ATSU-KCOM
MU-COM
VCOM (all 4 schools)
CUSOM
LECOM (all schools)
For MD schools I suggest these:
Colorado
Vermont
Quinnipiac
New York Medical College
Seton Hall
Drexel
Temple
Jefferson
George Washington
NOVA MD
Oakland Beaumont
Medical College Wisconsin
Rosalind Franklin
TCU-UNT

Absolutely nothing is guaranteed in the admission process. So get that out of your mind. Your application currently has great big gaping holes that you must fill before you apply. Don’t try to rush your volunteering. You’ve waited(put it off?) for this long so just take your time. ADCOMS will see that you are rushing through. They like to see longevity in activities. You need 50 hours of shadowing. You have a good start with 8 hours with a family care doc. So keep that up and if you are interested in a specific specialty ask if he can refer you to someone. But don’t go above 50 hours. You have too much else to do. You need clinical experience and nonclinical volunteering. I’m not sure what your duties are in the ED research. Perhaps if you told us we could help you decide if it will count as direct patient contact with the sick, injured and dying. If it doesn’t count you’ll need about 159+ hours of clinical experience. You also need around 200 hours of service to those less fortunate than yourself in your community. Look for soup kitchens, homeless shelters, Habitat for Humanity, work with disabled kids , volunteer at a senior center etc. Medicine is a service profession so you have to show you altruism. I doubt you’ll be ready to apply next cycle. You’ve waited this long to start getting ready, now slow down and do it right. Oh and start working on multitasking. You’ll need that skill as a med student/resident/doctor.

Hello! My duties in emergency department are to screen patients in epic, go into their room and explain about the research we are doing and have them consent to the study. I think it counts and im doing it for 8 hours a week for the longitivtiy of the semester. I think thats around ~100 hours. I was wondering if volunteering at my church counts as nonclinical volunteering.

What’s the study all about? Most research considers participants subjects and not patients. Not sure about what you are doing. What do you do with your church group? What activities? Who benefits?

There are bunch of studies going on, EMSB (much like biobank), complement to the EMSB study, Cardiac arrest study (we find patients who had cardiac arrests, trying to gather data about the cardiac arrest), PSCAN study (trying to find ways to treat new synthetic drugs). With the church, children who attends the church benefits, as youth group leaders help and direct children during the retreat.
