Any advice will be much appreciated.

I took some time off from school after performing horribly in college during my first 3 semesters. I later re-enrolled with a different perspective on my studies. I don't have an excuse for my poor academic performance, but I do feel that I have grown immensely since I began my road to gpa redemption.

So here are my current MD statistics after recently graduating with a degree in chemistry:

cgpa: 3.08
sgpa: 3.45
MCAT: 39

cgpa since becoming a pre-med student (2.5 years/90 credit hours of mostly upper div science courses): 3.98

ECs:
~150 hours of clinical volunteer work
~300 hours of non-clinical community service
2 years of research
~100 hours of shadowing
Several academic honors and awards
Part-time job in college (~25 hrs/week)

I am currently applying to SMP programs for this upcoming fall, so much of my success this cycle could very well be contingent upon my performance in such a program (if I am fortunate enough to receive an acceptance). I know that my gpa is atrocious, and when I started as a pre-med student I wasn't even sure that it was possible to overcome my academic record (at the time I had a cgpa of 2.21). But do I have a realistic chance at a US MD school this upcoming cycle?

Thank you all in advance for your time

Yes, with that high of an MCAT score. Is that your first attempt btw?

You are on the right track with joining an SMP to raise that GPA as that's the only thing holding you back from an MD acceptance. Do what you need to do to get that GPA up (postbacc, masters, smp etc) as that mcat is competitive for all MD schools

Yes, it is my first and only MCAT.

And thank you for your response. I'm currently putting together a list of schools, so I'll update this thread with that information shortly.

I'm also going to apply DO, as my DO gpa isnt quite as bad and I don't have much of a preference in that regard; however, I just wasn't sure if it would be worth it to apply MD at this time.

Thanks again!

You should be able to get into a DO school this cycle. AZCOM loves MCATs and they would probably drool over the prospect of getting someone with a score two points higher than Harvard's average.

Interestingly, there were only 4 total MD applicants in the two seasons from 2013-2015 that had a GPA and MCAT like yours, according to Table 25. Two got in.

There are a number of MD schools that reward reinvention:

Tulane
Vanderbilt
Duke
BU
Wayne State
NYMC
Albany
Case
Dartmouth
the Philly Triplets
Your state schools
Any new MD school
Any DO school

Any advice will be much appreciated.
