What are my chances at applying now for SGU/Ross for the August 2012 term? I have a 3.34 cGPA, 3.66 BCPM, and a 26R MCAT (9P, 9V, 8B). I am also looking at DO schools.

Also, is it really as expensive as it seems? It sounds like about 300k total for the 4 years including living expenses? Is that right?

yep ~300K for all 4 years, which is the same price for many private US DO and MD med schools.

I would recommend giving DO schools a very strong look, they have an easier time getting a residency just because they're not IMGs. but you should be able to get into both schools with your stats just apply early.

Thanks RussianJoo. My DO primary will be verified by early November prob and should have all secondaries submitted by December 1st. Do you think this is still early enough to be competitive? Most DO school deadlines are Feb 1 or March 1. My primary field of interest is prob anesthesiology but that could change. Is a university anesthesia program attainable with hard work from a DO school? I keep hearing about the fact that residency spots are not increasing and there will be more AMGs than spots in a couple of years. Where does that leave the DOs/IMGs? I don't care about the letters of my name but if SGU grads have a better chance matching gas or EM or im in the allo match than DOs then I'd prob prefer SGU.

I am curious about your comment regarding DOs having an easier time in the match because they are not IMGs, but aren't both groups lumped into the independent applicant category anyway?

Thanks so much.

I don't have any hard numbers to back this up, but would think that a grad of most US DO schools would have an easier time getting an ER or anesthesiology residency in the US than a St George graduate. However, this is going to be location-specific. For example, if you go to some random DO school in the West but apply to a New York City ER residency that has St George students rotating there, you probably won't do as well applying there versus some student from St George that the program knows well. If you go to St. George and you apply to some anesthesiology residency in Texas that has had students from nearby DO programs in their residency in the past, you probably won't do as well as said DO applicants in applying to THAT program. From a personal standpoint, I'm a fellow (US trained MD) at a university program in the US and I've seen multiple DO's in the fp program, and occasional ones in other programs here. I have encountered one Ross grad in the ER program but I'm pretty sure no other Caribbean grads. I think between St George and a US DO school, you should look at where/which states you may want to practice and do residency in, and also how much each school will cost you. Then consider the pluses/minuses of each school individually also.

I don't think there's going to be a huge difference in ability to get US MD residency if you compare St George vs. DO schools. You have to also think somewhat of where you think you will personally do well (academically) and that is hard to do as a premed. Schools spend money on being slick and trying to recruit you.

I think you have a shot this year...If you dont get in, apply next cycle and your chances would look better. DO is much better option than SGU in term of the easiness of finding residency.

DO>>>>>>>Caribbean in terms of finding a residency spot. With your grades, I would only apply DO.
