Im a 3rd year looking at neuro and was wondering what my chances are.
I have a step 1 of 205 and a GPA of 3.4.
I have been invloved in research in neuroanatomy, unpublished of course.

What are my chances of getting a good residency? I know UCSF,WashU,MassGen, etc are out, but what about places like Mayo, UofChicago, CaseWestern,UCSD,UTMB?

I go to a small MD program and am the only person I know interested in Neurology and have had no exposure to other students applying ahead of me.

What are some good programs that arent in everyone's top 10 list? What are things that neuro programs look for in applicants that others may not?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

There are a number of things to consider here. first, don't always take the name of a university to mean they have a good neuro program or a bad one. for example, not to pick on any of these programs, but uchicago only matched one person in the match last year, and had the other ?four? scramble in. that doesn't mean its a bad program, but it is a red flag. it does mean its not a great program though. you should not have a problem matching in neuro. i don't know what a 3.4 gpa translates into, but i think you should match into a probably 2nd tier program if your interview skills are decent and you have more personality than a bump on a log. but dont take a program's name to be the be all and end all.

good luck.

Thanks for the info. Knowing about malignant programs may be the best information I could hear about.
The 3.4 GPA puts me in the middle of my class. I was just wondering what kind of programs I could get into. I was dissapointed with the step 1 score and didnt know how much it would freefall me.

Has anyone been to some good 2nd tier programs and have thoughts on those?

The second tier is huge. There are a lot of great programs. Do you have geographic preferences that could help narrow the list?

Im from the west coast and would like it there, but I like Chicago and Texas as well.
