Aloha, I need help with my school list list and what my chance are of the school that I am considering applying to. Any additional information or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I am in the unique position of being a resident of Hawai'i but not a resident by their application standards.

Here are my Stats
Graduated: BS Biology -Human Health Science
Cum GPA: 3.98
Sci GPA: 4.0
MCAT: 35
Shadowing Physician: 75 hr unpaid internship at peeds clinic. Working on getting more opportunities.
Volunteer: Recently started at local hospital, once or twice a week, currently at 40 hrs but will stay active, 4 hr shifts.
Past Employment: Served 5 years in USMC, Scout Sniper. Veteran of OIF. Honorable discharge, E-5.
Current Employment: Server at restaurant. Not super proud of this but living in Hawaii is so expensive and it is flexible and pays the bills.
Future Employment: Trying to get a job as a lab tech or phlembotomist at Diagnostic Laboratories ..probably will still have to be waiting tables on the side.

Reach Schools
-UC San Francisco
-UC San Diego
-Johns Hopkins
-Feinberg

In Range
-Ohio State
-Baylor
-Dartmouth
-Miller, Miami

Fall Back
-Milwaukee
-Wake Forest
-Rush, Chicago
-Saint Louis University

Is this enough schools? Should I have more "in range" choices, less "fall back" choices. Any comments on the current list? Thanks again!

The 5 years in the military is a HUGE plus but maybe throw in a semester of research? A friend just got into every school he applied to including JH and Pritzger with similar stats as you have. 12 schools is a fair amount to apply to but maybe get more in range schools seeing as you have the same number of those as reach schools at the moment. Otherwise good luck and thank you for your service

First off, many thanks for your service to our country. Semper Fi!

You're a rock star. Nothing wrong with aiming high. Where do you want to go to school, geography-wise?

It was my pleasure to serve our country Kdoc2020 and Goro.
@Goro , I would like to go to California as my #1. TX or FL would be #2. So I am really considering those 4 schools that I mentioned in terms of geography.
#1 UCSF
#2 UCSD
Tied for 3rd Baylor or Miller.
Other than those locations, I don't have much of a preference. Ideas?

Excellent application ! Impressive numbers and awesome experiences. The lack of significant research could hurt you at some of the big name academic centers (I'm going through this a little right now) but you have such an interesting story I think you would still get some traction. 5 years as a marine scout sniper will definitely turn some heads and make you stand out. Unreal man, really.

To echo the sentiments above, I also wanted to thank you for serving our country. It is appreciated more than you know.

A fellow service member is now going to Mayo Medical School (age 32 years old). Seems Mayo like military service, But he also got into Dartmouth too last year (they like Non-traditionals, so you would have that advantage). Your lack of research may not hurt you as much there (like U of Michigan, they like research).

As others echo, Many thanks for your service to our country. Best wishes to you for a successful application season.
