Hi everyone,
Aspiring for B.S in psychology, minor biology
cGPA 3.18
sGPA 4.0 (have taken NO PREMED classes yet-just intro bio/L)
No research
No shadowing
Volunteered twice at ASPCA
Psychology Club
ASL club (about to join)
43 credit units.
Wont finnish undergrad till 2015-16
5 or 6 year undergrad ( idk if this is bad! )
its my third year at my university

I know my EC's are bad. but we don't have a lot of premed help where I live and i honestly don't know what to do! after this semester I wanted to apply as a SCRIBE at my local hospital.

I will start volunteering by the end of the year, I jsut havent fully decided where to go yet.

Any tips are appreciated.
I think I have a lot of room to grow and boost that GPA, i hope!!

Thanks all!
if i need to add anymore info please let me know 😉

Focus on a few things at a time and slowly add more responsibility. No need to take your newfound motivation and passion for medicine and then bite off more than you can chew. Not trying to insult your intelligence here just being a cautionary voice. That being said, as your course loads are going to get very science heavy I think you might be better off starting with volunteering a few hours a week and focus on boosting that GPA. You need to be getting the best grades you possibly can at this point and working part time will be a much bigger time commitment than volunteering. If that goes well for you then look into "upgrading" and apply for the scribe position. Just my two cents but I hope it helps.

Think of how you're going to sell yourself to an admissions committee. Are you the type of candidate who goofed off the first few years of college, but got his act together, crushed his GPA and MCAT, has lots of extracirriculars and shadowing so he knows what he's getting himself into, and has good LOR's?

If that's you I think you have a great shot.

PS why not just major in Biology, and minor in Psych? I know all the hot girls are in psych but if you major in Bio it might look better plus you'd get all your prereq courses easily out of the way.

Adcoms don't care about your major. Use search function, there is been consensus about this in these forums.

Just take it one step at a time, not taking on too much at once either with EC's and classes.
If you have 3 years to complete everything you have plenty of time for activities and building up... ( great hours / leadership / awards and recognition etc) in those activities .

Start taking Pre-reqs and get A's. It is definitely possible to raise your GPA, but it takes time and obviously 4.0 quarters consistently. there is plenty of pre-med help here on SDN also 🙂

Numbers are too low for any MD school and at the low end of acceptable for DO schools. You defintely need some patient contact experience to show us that you want to be around sick and injured people.

Try volunteering at hospice, nursing homes, summer camps for disabled children, Habitat for Humanity, American Red Cross, or EMT/paramedics.
