Hi guys,

I am Asian from CA. Went to UCSD for undergrad, currently finishing up with my postbac as a career changer. I am applying in June 2015 and was wondering if I could get some suggestions on which schools I should be applying.

undergrad (majored in economics, sGPA are GEs)
cGPA: 3.19
sGPA: 3.28

community college (took classes during summer to take GEs out of the way)
cGPA: 3.61
sGPA: 4.0

postbac
GPA: 4.0 (80+ units - all from science classes)

AACOMAS/AMCAS GPA (combining above 3 together)
cGPA: 3.51
sGPA: 3.80
MCAT: 28 (10 PS/ 8 VR / 10 BS)

EMT - 6 months (full-time)
Hospice volunteer - 2 years (~80 hours) and mentored a high school student
ER volunteer - 1 year (~200 hours)
Nursing and rehab volunteer - 1 year (~100 hours)
Junior volunteer director at a hospital - 4 months when I apply (~2 hours/day, unpaid position)
Shadowed an ER doctor (40 hours) - will get LOR from him
Shadowed a DO doctor (8 hours) - before shadowing, he told me that he can only let me shadow once and cannot write me a letter due to the hospital regulation

Since I do not have a letter from a DO, should I not bother with schools like VCOM, PCOM, LECOM where DO letters are either required or strongly recommended? Or should I still apply and hope for the best?

Willing to relocate anywhere for a med school. If I could get you guys' advice on where I should be applying, I would appreciate it. Also, are MD schools out of the question? (EVMS, Quinnipiac, Cooper, MSU, etc)

I am interested in hem/onc and if there are particular schools that can better prepare me, I would appreciate it. But I am really open to all the suggestions.

Thanks guys!

Wrong forum, but you'll be fine. Apply early, but you need to get a DO letter, don't limit yourself due to something so easy. Find another DO to shadow for a few shifts. MD might be out of reach due to your GPA. A lot of MD schools look at post-bacc degrees differnet.

No, I think your best shot is DO, but MD schools are not out of question. Apply to lower-tier MDs like Rosalind Franklin, EVMS, Albany, etc.

What part of "DO LOR is required" don't you understand?

You're competitive for all DO schools except AZCOM.

You're in striking distance for Netter, TCMC, Albany, NYMC, SLU, MCW, Rush, loma Linda, Drexel and Temple.

You'll get a fine training at any med school. Suggest not worrying about specialty until you actually get into medical school
