Hi everyone-
I am a PA resident. 3.96 cGPA, similar science GPA (maybe a tiny bit lower), 33 MCAT (11 11 11), 1 year of research with 2 papers about to be written, ~50 hours of shadowing, 40 hours of volunteering previously + >100 hrs in the next month in a hospital in Sri Lanka.
What are my chances at top tier schools? I am guessing my MCAT is the major flag holding me back. Any advice?

Your gpa seem to be the only thing really exceptional in your application.

Everything else seems about average for medical school acceptances, which would not suffice for top schools generally. Seems like you could have used more research, clinical, shadowing, etc.

40 hours of volunteering over your whole college career is kind of on the low side. Yeah you say you will be doing 100+ hours next month in Sri Lanka, but that isn't the type of dedicated volunteering that a lot of schools like to see. It would be better to have done 150 hours over 1-2 years, compared to doing 200 hours in a month, if you get what i mean.

Hi,

Your stats are impressive, but I kind of agree with the above poster. If your thinking about the TOP tier med schools, like Harvard, Johns Hopkins, and San Fransisco, you have to be exceptional. These type of med schools get hundreds of applications like these, and they are looking to train not only doctors, but also leaders in healthcare. You should obv apply, but these kinds of medical schools are always tough to get into.

Yeah sorry I was in a rush last time-
My research has spanned the past 1.5 years, working for 16+ hours a week. No papers out yet, but by the time interviews roll around they will definitely be out. I have been a TA for 4 classes (orgo 1 and 2, intro to genetics, biochemistry), and will be a TA for cell biology in the fall. I have been tutoring for ~2 hrs/week since first semester sophomore year, and have continued throughout. I have spent my winter breaks shadowing and assisting a surgeon, anesthesiologist, and rheumatologist (although not positive yet of course, i am interested in pain management/anesthesiology). I volunteered clinically for ~50 hours, and I leave for a developing country on wednesday where I will be in the hospital volunteering. I live in a pretty bad area of Rochester Ny, and I helped organize a spelling bee to promote academic excellence in the community, which occupied many hours over the course of a semester. I was a tutor and a judge for the actual spelling bee. There are other random things also. Thanks for your help!
