Hello everyone...

I got accepted into MSU just last november and currently taking my first class towards finishing my pre-dental requirements( Gen Chem I along with its lab.)

I also work a full time job as a software developer for the state of michigan, my schedule is pretty tight.

I graduated from University of Detroit in 2004 with a BS in Computer science and a minors in math, however, my over all GPA was only a 3.01 (crap) I never took any chem or any biology (kinda works out for me, since I get to take them now and maybe score well)

By mid 2008, I am hoping to have completed all my pre-reqs (Gen Chem I & II, Orgo I & II, and Gen Biology I & II, along with all thier labs), what are my chances to get into a Dental school ? I know there are like more than 50 schools in the U.S of A. Do I even stand a chance ?

I am hopin to get the BEST possible grades I can get in those pre-reqs, so Maybe that will give me an edge..... am I just dreaming here or do I really stand a chance............ Please be realistic as much as possible.... thnx

Why not, kick some arse as far as the prereqs and then that will help you do well on the DATs, and then do some shadowing. Addcomms love non-traditional as long as you are sincere about dentistry. Good Luck.

oh believe me, I'll try my hardest to kick as much arse as I can in those pre-reqs.... The only once that intimidate me are the Orgo I and II, I heard those are pretty tough, other than that, I think I'll be ok

thanks for your response tho 🙂

hey Nasem, what provoked the change to dentistry? i hear u computer science guys are making pretty descent money and are in high demand.

Where there's a will, there's a way. Work hard and keep the dream alive.

Its not soo much the money, I make pretty good money for being 25 years of age and I have been promoted 3 times in the past 2 years so I know I got the skill. But the job itself is boring me to death. In my job there are no one-on-one interactions with other humans lol.... Your ALWAYS coding or testing or investigating an issue. Gets boring after a while

as per the question of why the change to dental..... My sister is a dentist, I would say she is the biggest influence. I have been to her place many times since last august, so I know what I am getting my self into. I find her job more interesting than mine.

As far as money goes, If I take the dentistry route, In the next 7 or 8 years, I'll be in 300k+ in debt, and when I graduate, my average yearly income will be around 120-140 K which is nice but not nice enough compared to someone who will have more than 10+ years in the I.T industry. Those guys start to easily make 100k+ after 8 years or so AND without being 300+k in debt

They can be tough, but look everyone who made it into dental, and med school did it. So it can be done.

Follow your heart. If it speaks, listen. We grow great by dreams. All big men are dreamers. They see things in the soft haze of a spring day or in the red fire of a long winter's evening. Some of us let these great dreams die, but others nourish and protect them; nurse them through bad days till they bring them to the sunshine and light which comes always to those who sincerely hope that their dreams will come true.

Trust me...Orgo I and II are not so bad...at least they are not as bad as people claim it is. It depends on the school you go to too...some schools have 300 people in the class and only about 15-20 get As...that's hard! But if you go to a school where 50% of the people get As...not so bad. Keep focus and you'll do fine!

First of all for Orgo get Dr. Azadnia or Rathke, I had Dr. A for both and 4.0 both classes, found it really understandable. I heard Rathke is even better. Second make sure you're challenging yourself with the course load. Schools like to see you are able to meet the demands of multiple classes. At State I've taken 13-15 credits a semester with probably 75% of the classes being science, but I wasn't working a full time job which I assume you are. Also you'll want to probably take more than just the prereqs I know a lot of schools like to see biochem, histo, physio, immuno, psych, and other upper level chem and bio classes. They also like to know that you like to work with your hands so if you don't have a hands on hobby you should probably pick one up. Any more questions about MSU, PM me
