Hey,
Pretty much I'm a Canadian Applicant and these are my stats.
I've finished most of my prereqs and this is my GPA.

CGPA 3.1
Science is around 2.95-3.0

However this is my year by year breakdown
Freshman 2.37
Sophomore 3.25
Junior 3.69

What happened was in my first year I had several family problems, and my mother was diagnosed with a disease and my grandfather had passed away. Unfortunately for me as a science student most of my prerequisite courses were done that year, so my grades in those suck.

My MCAT was PS:10 VR:11 BS:11 and T (32T) I only wrote once.

I've applied to Albany, GW, New York Medical, Michigan State, Howard and Rosalind Franklin.

EC: Started charity that is now one of most successful in Canada, 1 year lab work, volunteered in 2 hospitals.. worked part time job during Junior year, Exec roles on 4 campus clubs and several similar things.

I know I have an upward trend but my GPA i think is too low, do I have a shot at some of these schools? My personal statement I did a lot of work on as well.. Will schools take into account what happened first year? Should I apply to Carrib MD, do graduate work, (I was thinking apply Ireland as well), or a DO school? I'm not sure what to do or what my chances are. Thanks..

I think you're in decent shape at DO schools but not at MD schools. You're correct that your GPA is too low. I applied with almost identical grades and a 35 and got 1 whopping interview out of 28 apps. I'd suggest applying after your senior year. If you can get your GPA up to a 3.3, you'll be in much better shape at MD schools.

Thanks for the quick reply. I skimmed through your profile Congratulations, inspiring stuff!

I was just worried that If i wait around say a year and apply again if I only get it up to 3.3 (realistically it'd be closer to a 3.25 or so) if I'd waste a year applying again and not getting into any MD schools. I'm hoping my ec and app will help out, but just not sure what to consider, cause I don't want to bring it up apply and just get all rejections again. Its really just a horrible first year killing me. Thanks again..

Apply for MD and DO, see where it goes, it's not looking to good though. If you don't get accepted do a post bac + more research + more volunteering + more shadowing. Yup, that's all that's left to be said here.
