Hey SDNers,

I was wondering if there was anyone out there that has gotten interviews and/or acceptances with a 7 on verbal reasoning. I'm concerned because verbal does tend to be weighted heavier than the other sections. I saw a similar thread but it's outdated (2005). I heard that some schools will screen out a score of 7 or lower on any section. Either right off the bat or just before secondaries. Thoughts?

Has anyone heard anything specifically about Texas schools? Any success with a 7 on verbal? I am a Texas resident and am hoping to stay here. Here are my stats: I have a 30 overall (11/7/12) and a 4.0 GPA, overall and science. i have leadership experience as an officer of a pre health club for two years, research experience of 4 semesters (500 hours, ongoing), teaching experience as a TA for two semesters and instructor for a freshman based course, volunteer experience at the hospital (250+), non clinical volunteering (200), and am now working as a scribe. Im just worried that they will throw out my application once they see a 7 in verbal and not even give me an interview. Any thoughts on this?

Thanks in advance!!!

You may not get into Baylor, but I think you'll be fine with your 4.0 GPA and Texas residency.

Texas is a good state to live in when it comes to applying to medical school. There may be another state school opening up in 2016 (Dell) so I think you will probably receive some interviews.

Verbal is not weighted heavier than the other sections, but schools often pre-screen for scores below a given school's threshold. A 7 is bad news. Consider a retake: if you can boost that 7 to a 9 you'll almost certainly get in somewhere, and even if you get an 8 on variance alone it'll probably get you past a bunch of pre-screens.

I got a 27 (11/6/10) on my first test and 32 (12/8/12) on my retake, so 7 average. I've gotten multiple IIs and acceptances but i also applied both Md and DO. It's not a kiss of death but you might get screened out at some.

I had a 7 or lower VR score and got into a decently competitive MD program. My science scores were ~15 each so I think adcom thought it was just an unlucky day for me.

You have the added advantage of many Texas medical schools that favor IS applicants so you'll just need to push on your PS, secondaries, and update letters.

Meanwhile, I suggest that you study and plan on retaking your mcat while also applying. That way if you don't get in, you'll have a better score for next cycle.

This is what I did for this past app cycle.
