Hi - I am applying to allopathic medical school right now and am unsure if I should be applying to osteopathic schools as well if I really want to begin my journey to becoming a doctor and matriculate somewhere for the fall of 2015. I was hoping for this forums advice on my chances?

I am an Illinois resident who went to a top liberal arts school for undergraduate, and is currently finishing up the last few courses of a post bac. My sgpa is 3.48 and my cumulative is 3.61. My gpa with grade replacement for DO would be sgpa is 3.71 and cumulative is 3.72. My mcat is a balanced 33. I have done some research, and have some leadership positions from college, and I have done extensive community service with underserved populations in my community. Overall my extracurriculars are nothing spectacular I have done some shadowing and worked in an ER, and this semester I am currently working in a hospital at two volunteer positions.

I am applying very broadly to about 25-35 low to mid tier schools, and was wondering what my chances are of getting in somewhere or if I truly want to become a doctor and matriculate next fall I should additionally be applying to DO schools?

Thanks for your reply. So do you think even with my lower science gpa and weaker extracurriculars I will have a shot at an acceptance? Also do you think if I just want to matriculate somewhere for the fall of 2015 it would be worthwhile to apply to 5-6 osteopathic schools as well - in particular I'm interested in UNECOM due to family connections to the state of Maine?

Goro suggest:

SIU (IF you're from southern ILL)
Georgetown
Colorado
Miami
St. Louis
Albany
Albert Einstein

Thanks for your replies Goro (I'll add the schools you recommended that I don't have yet) and gyngyn. Do you think its worthwhile for me to apply DO as well if md/do doesn't matter to me and I just want to matriculate somewhere next fall or do you think my odds of md school are pretty good with this list?

Just wanted to check back in for advice. Quick recap Illinois resident sGPA 3.5, cum GPA 3.6, and MCAT 33. I have been rejected at 15 schools. I still have outstanding applications at the following (And yes I know I applied to a crazy amount of schools but I am just dying to get in somewhere this cycle). I was complete at all the remaining schools between late August and Early October. I was wondering what my odds of getting an additional II this late in the cycle are at this point or if I should start preparing for my reapp

List:
Jefferson
Loyola
MCW
MSU
Oakland
Quinnipiac
Rush
SLU
Temple
Toledo
UCSF (received secondary)
U of Chicago
Cincinnati
Iowa
Michigan
Rochester
Wisconsin
Western Michigan (Phone Interview in October assuming may be silent rejection)
Albert Einstein
SUNY Downstate
NYU
Creighton
Albany
Rowan
Colorado
Wake Forest
Dartmouth
Emory
Penn State
Commonwealth
SUNY Buffalo
EVMS

Your numbers are good, but a late August - early October completion is a bit on the late side. As such, you'll need to be patient and wait. I am reasonably confident that you'll be hearing some good news (IIs) after the new year.

I know how you are feeling right now, but this cycle is far from over!
