I'm a Brazilian citizen, but just got a permanent residency (green card). I've done 4 years of college in a decent state school.
My cGPA is 3.9, my sGPA is 3.8
I took the MCAT in 2013 and got a 24 (8/8/8) and retook last year getting a 30 (10/9/11).
- I have 300 hours of hospital volunteering at the ER
- 40 hours of shadowing
- 3 years being the main chair for my local Relay for Life
- 3 years of teaching and coordinating the CATCH program (Coordinated Approach To Child Health)
- 1 year or being a tutor and learning assistant
- 2 good letter from science teachers I have built strong relationships with

I'm also an Ohio resident.

I'll be applying this next app cycle.

Should I just apply in state or do I have a shot anywhere else?

Thanks everyone

Edit: I forgot to say I also have 1 year of research but no publications

If you check to be sure a given school doesn't average your MCAT scores before consideration is given, I'd think you have a shot at less-selective OOS schools for which your ECs are a good fit to their mission statement (ie, those that are not research-oriented).

Are you only interested in MD programs? That 24 may be a killer despite your great GPA and ECs...you should look at DO programs also

I just want to go to a school where I'd be competitive for all residencies

With the AOA/ACGME merger, you'll have access to all residency training programs. Just do well in med school.

First get into medical school before you worry about residencies. Beggars can't be choosy.
That'd be unwise. I really wanna be a doctor above everything, but lets be honest, being satisfied with the specialty is important.

I know I have a good shot at most DO programs, but I am afraid that would hinder my future ability to choose which part of medicine I want to practice, plus I do not believe in the whole DO philosophy (nothing against people who do).

Do you have shadowing experience in each speciality?? There's a reason you don't pick specialties until fourth year...you're naive to say you know 100% for sure what speciality you want to pursue. And being a non-US citizen and a 24 on your first MCAT, you very well may have no choice but DO. If you study hard and do well on Step 1, then you can pursue any speciality regardless of where you go to school. The only thing that this requires is being IN med school and if you're too arrogant to accept that, you might never get the chance.

Never said I knew what specialty I want, hold your horses bro. I'm a permanent resident, which is treated the same as a US citizen.

Sorry if I'm sounding arrogant. Not my intention at all

I love how people think that just because they have the MD, they can waltz into any specialty. They're competitive for a reason. Your call.

I read on other parts of the forum that some residencies don't even look at DO's applicants...

Has anyone compiled a list of schools that average MCAT scores and schools that take the most recent one? I will make one for next cycle if anyone hasn't yet

Here is a very-old, incomplete, now inaccurate list from many years ago that is missing all new and some older schools. I have seen nothing more recent that is as complete. So you don't have to do all the leg work, you might consider starting a thread in the main PreMed Allo Forum asking folks to help out, as there are many in your shoes.

Guess I'll have a little project to work on my free time hahaha

I found the original thread with that list earlier today but it is from like 12 years ago!

I'm surprised no one looked into this for so long
