What Are My Chances?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am sure you'll get a few nibbles because of that GRE score. Hopefully you can get some schools to see that you really are academically talented despite your bad grades. I totally believe you that your classes were harder than many other people's due to the school you go to, however the unfortunate truth is that that is rarely taken into consideration in PT school admissions. What grades you get matter, where you get them doesn't. So having such a low GPAs, especially pre-req GPA, is going to kill your application at a lot of schools, that's just the sad truth. But there aren't a lot of applicants with such a lopsided application (ie 99th percentile GRE, but well below average pre-req GPA, cGPA). I honestly am not totally sure how that will play out. But I think if you apply and interview strategically you will end up with at least one acceptance.

Also realize that interview scores and variety and breadth of experience in observation hours both play a huge a huge role too. LORs and essay also have an impact to a slightly lesser extent. These are all areas where you can do yourself plenty of favors if you are diligent.

Hopefully there are a couple of other low GPA, high GRE people that can chime in. Also I strongly recommend taking time to study the ACCEPTANCES, ETC sticky at the top of the forum. You can get a good idea of what kind of stats have gotten people into various schools. You will also learn that this process is incredibly random and stochastic and it is very hard to truly prognosticate what someone's chances are.

my PTCAS Overall GPA: 3.05
Science GPA: 3.01 (that's with retakes)
GRE Score: Q:154 V:145 W:3.5

My stats are terrible and cannot complete with 99.9% of the students that are on this forum.
This round I received interviews from NYIT, Western University of Health Sciences, West Coast University, and University of St. Augustine.
I got accepted to USA for the summer 2015 cohort and will be attending their program. I got rejected because I performed horribly on my NYIT interview. But since I got accepted to my top choice I chose to skip my western interview and just attend West Coast because I was already in LA.
So I'm very sure your fate will be the same if not much better. You just have to research what schools look for and what kind of students they accept. I really hope this helps. If you have any questions feel free to ask.

All the schools that your are plannin' to apply to are pretty competitive for your GPA. Some schools may bump your GPA up due to the fact that Cornell is a hard school but I wouldn't depend on it, especially with how competitive PT school admissions have become. I would research schools with a lower average GPA (~3.5 or less). I would also add back up schools that do not use PTCAs, such as St. Augustine, or schools in the process of being accredited (West Coast, SD state).

Your GRE is ridiculously good though. If it were me, I would add at least 6 well researched schools to your list to be safe in addition to several safety schools.

I think you have a shot. I had a 2.97 overall GPA, and GRE was V 169, Q 158, AW 3.5. I did many of my preReqs later on at cc's, and my preReq GPA was 3.4. I got into Columbia, and was wait listed at Boston University.

It seems like Columbia takes the difficulty of your school/major into account (UCSD Bioengineering for me), and evaluates candidates more holistically in general.

I also have a publication/conference presentations for research in Huntington's disease. Something extra like that could help you at certain schools.

Hope that information is helpful. I do really think you have a good shot, especially because your GRE is outstanding and your GPA is at least above the 3.0 mark. Just carefully research acceptance stats to find out what is important to the schools you're looking into, and add a few safeties. Best of luck!

If it helps: My GPA was even lower and my GRE a little lower than yours and got into 2/4 and wait listed for one other of 4 and then outright rejected for one of four. Only one of the four schools I applied to had a formal interview and I got into that one.

Try NIU and Governors State University in IL
