Hi guys I am a Psychology Major with a 3.5 CGPA and a 3.25 SGPA. I got my MCAT score last month and it was 503.

- I obtained my CNA license and worked in a private care home (1000 HRS+)
- BLS Certified
- Worked in a lab at a clinic (500 HRS +)
- Volunteered at a elder care program in a underrepresented community (100 HRS)
- Volunteered at a hospital (100 HRS)
- Shadowed a family medicine physician (50 HRS)
- School Premed Club (1 Year)

I can only seem to get one LOR from a science professor!

Do I have a chance for MD. Should I try for the carrib/D.O?

I graduate next semester, should I do a post-bacc program and apply after I complete that?

Thanks for your time!

sGPA is a little low, and 503 is a little low too.

This is better suited for the what are my chances sub forum, but I'll bite.

Your MCAT is fine for DO schools, as well as your GPA (maybe a little on the low side with the sGPA). Apply DO for sure regardless.

As far as MD schools go, what state are you a resident of? That will play a huge factor here. If you're in a very MD friendly state, like Texas or Louisiana. LSU has a great school, but it isn't ranked and they take majority in state applicants, so they typically have lower stats/easier to get into relative to other states.

If you're from California, you're ****ed.

For private MD schools I think you'll struggle. I have a 504, 3.95 science and 3.85 cumulative with some exceptional ECs like 6000+ hours as a police officer, paramedic, etc. and I feel like I'm struggling this cycle and wish I would have applied to some DO programs because my future is uncertain right now.

AVOID the carribean, any success stories you hear are the exception, not the rule. The weed out rate before step 1 is like 50% some places, and you'll struggle to match if you even make it there.

You should be okay for DO - I'd aim for that.

Yea, Ill echo what was said above. You can apply DO and likely have a shot if you apply broadly. Make sure you shadow a DO physician and get him to write you a letter. Also, you will absolutely need a second science letter. If you have trouble getting one at your UG, take a science class at community college (maybe in the evening), ace it, and get a letter there.

As for MD it'll be slim pickings unless you're from an MD friendly state. If you're URM you may have a shot given your numbers.

I don't think you need a formal postbacc program since you've completed pre-reqs already. I'd say apply early next May for DO/state MD and take some science classes at a local university while applying. That way if you're waitlisted you can update with some strong grades around winter time. Alternatively you could work and try to get some more shadowing experience if $ is an issue.

Best of luck!

I feel like you may be a competitive applicant for DO. Your healthcare credentials are solid, as is your commitment to altruism. I would target the mid to lower tier DO programs and apply early: you should receive several interview invites with this strategy.

100% agree.
