Well I took the DAT last Friday and pretty disappointed

AA: 17
RC: 21
QR: 13 (Killed the AA)
Bio: 18
Gen: 17
Ochem:17
TS: 18
PAT: 16 (24,25,22 on practice tests -- and have artistic background, go figure)

I am applying to (UIC, SIU, Marquette, Arizona, UNLV, NOVA, Boston, Tufts, Case, Maryland, Indiana)

I know I have to take it again and revenge that QR (Damn the MATH) but I can't take it till August, so what do you think my chances would be if I didn't take the DAT again? Are these okay scores or Horrible? I see people with 24/25/23 and get discouraged so has anybody else got scores like these?

Thanks for imput

retake the dat

whats your gpa?
I agree with crazytrain, unless you have a badass GPA I would retake it and try to shoot for a 19 or better. Some people will probably try and tell you that they heard this guy got in with a 17 and that guy got in with 16, but the truth is they are very much in the minority. If someone gets in with very mediocre stats, chances are they have a family member on the inside pulling strings or some other in that you may or may not have.

Wait.... Lets see what his/her GPA is. If its about 3.3+, with AA17 and TS18, you are in good shape if you apply early in the game. QR is a serious damage, but you should check with the schools of your choice by all means - they will give your their opinion of you stats - and this what matters more than what you hear on SDN.

If your GPA is sub-3.3, you might still have a shot if you apply to many private schools. Below 3.0 is almost impossible chance of being competitive these days. You can always re-take the DAT if you are not personally satisfied with your scores, and feel you can improve your scores - which IMHO you have plenty of time to do so.

Again, CALL the schools before you make your next move.

Good Luck

I totally agree. You'll always hear stories of invidual cases where got people got in with mediocre stats, but there's usually a factor that isn't being disclosed. Being connected or being a URM is usually what provides that extra push to get accepted. The basic statistics of your situation are not in your favor since around 7000 apply each year and there are 4200 spots, a 17 AA puts you very close to the edge there.

Just keep your head up and do better next time. August isn't too late either. Send in everything now, and update your scores after you take it again.

Bille listen here bud my stats were not that great and i did not have any connections or know someone on admissions but i still got accepted.

Major: bio Minor: chem
GPA=3.09
DAT:
Bio=18
Chem=17
Ochem=19
Reading=19
QR=16 (did'nt have time to study for this section)
AA=18
TS=18
PAT=17
Accepted at NYU, BU
Waitlisted at Buffalo, Crieghton, Houston(UT-houston), Detroit-mercy

On the bright side, what i hear is that some schools don't really put a lot of emphasis on your QR score, although 13 does seem a little low. But depending on what your GPA is all you need to do is improve on your QR score. Lastly Bille, DON'T GET DISCOURAGED not everyone accepted into dental school scores in the 20's on the DAT and has a 3.5 GPA.

I would go ahead and apply soon but let them know you are re-taking the DAT. Study like crazy for the next three months. You will do well. Submitting your DAT scores in August is not that late. Start studying now :luck:

Yeah, definitely do not be discouraged, but retake it. Even a one point improvement helps the statistics of your situation drastically and I know you will improve much more than that. Good luck!

You should definately retake it, 17s in AA and other science sections are considered borderline in most schools. Try to get above 19 on these sections. QR is not really important but you can really improve if you do the sample tests from various resources as they have very similar questions (and do it under DAT testing time limit to better prepare you). Since now you have experienced first hand the real DAT, you should be more comfortable/confident in taking it again.

👍

To answer the GPA question my current overall is 3.27 and Science is 3.4. The I know this guy/gal who got in story is the minority but I sure do hear it alot. I won't rest my admissions packet on the one DAT score and I plan on retaking it and have definitely let that be known on the AADSAS section. My Math section I totally fubar'red, I marked 5 questions (stupid of me not to put in any answer) and then ran out of time with 4 questions left. So I missed 9 questions, probably due to the fact I wanted to LEAVE. 😱 I Plan on sending the app on June 1st, so maybe the earliness will help. I appreciate all the words of determination and definitely help in these last few weeks before sending APP. Good luck to all of you as well
