Hey everyone,
I'm intending to go DO (emergency medicine or general surgery). I attend a top 10 liberal arts college and have a 3.6 overall 3.3 sci gpa. I have been a supervisor and on the board of directors of campus EMS since I was a freshman. My own research in neuroscience since I was a freshman (obtained my own grant). Extensive EMS experience since I was a junior in high school (paid and volunteer). Plenty of ortho. Surgery shadowing. I'm a PA resident intending to go to PCOM and Applying to all PA schools for that matter (Jefferson, Pitt, Drexel, temple). Also looking into cooper Rowan in jersey. What are my chances? (My story is kinda unique, med school has been my dream since I was 13. It's all I've ever wanted. I have family issues I tend to personally so I need to stay relatively close to home for them.)

Thanks guys!

Check out my WAMCs. Similar stats. I will be attending PCOM in the fall. One tip, your dream of attending medical school is not unique... especially not to adcoms. Be sure to focus on other things in your application.

Haven't taken the mcat as I'll be a junior next year. However I've been determined enough to sit down and take practice exams and I keep receiving between 508-510. First author pub. is in the works and will be out by the end of 2017 if all goes as planned.

Everything will be contingent on your MCAT score. But, with a first author pub and a good app, I suspect that MD is very possible with a high mcat score.

If you had a high gpa, around the 3.8/3.9 range, a 505 and up would have been enough. But with your gpa, either a really high mcat is in order (particularly because of your sGPA) or a post-bacc

Thanks guys,

For the record, I did not mean that my dream of going to med school is unique (my mistake), I meant my back story in terms of where I come from and what I do for my family. However, I do appreciate the advice and will not dwell on any of this in my apps.
I'm hoping the extensive mcat prep I am just beginning will pay off. I feel confident though.

Does anybody know anything about what cooper Rowan looks for? Do I have a shot being an OOS student?

Also, is pcom within reach? Just curious.

I appreciate all of the advice.

MCAT is key. It could be the difference between you only getting one acceptance and being able to choose from multiple schools.

I thought we were talking about DO, but yeah a good MCAT score (512+) could snag a few MD interviews with a 3.3 sGPA

Only if OP lives in a very lucky state.

He is in PA I believe, a 3.3/512+ has an ok chance at interview at TCMC at the very least. I think it is still worth a shot honestly, I live in a pretty unlucky state and I have friends with 3.3s who have gotten an interview or two with a smart MD list. Obviously DO is the best bet, a 3.3/508 is good enough for just about every DO school.

Yea...especially with that first author publication. I'd say not to worry OP and to keep on keeping on. And do whatever you are currently doing to snag that 510.

Agree 100%. Drexel, NYMC and Albany might be worth a crack as well
