Hello! Just looking to see what you guys think of my chances on getting into OT school!

So, I graduated from the University of Houston with a 3.6 gpa. A little low, but I did graduate with the Honors College where I received a B.S. in Psychology with a minor in Medicine and Society. The thing that worries me is that I took A&P 1 and 2 there, and received a C+ and B- in them. However, I am currently retaking those courses at a community college and received an A in A&P 1...and it will hopefully be the same with A&P 2.

My top picks include TWU, UTMB, and TX Tech! My prerequisite gpa should be around a 3.7-4.0. I will have about 100 hours by the time I apply. The settings are pediatric home health and acute brain injury rehabilitation.

For work, I am a recreation counselor at an adaptive recreation center for people with disabilities. I also volunteer for an equine therapy company (I'll have about 40 volunteer hours at the time of application).

What do you think my chances are for the 2018 application cycle? Thank you for reading!!

I went to UH too and my stats are almost similar to yours. I would recommend to just make sure you turn in your application as early as possible and have a strong personal statement as well as letters of recommendation. I got interviews to Tech and UTMB and I believe I had a good chance at TWU but turned my application in a week before the due date which cost me. I had B's in my anatomy classes and 1 C for anatomy lab, which I thought would have never gotten me anywhere but I believe my personal statement and recommendation letters really showed who I was overall and got me interviews with the schools!

Solely based on your stats, you should be fine. Make sure you write a good personal statement and kill your interview.

However, I think it might be a little bit too late to apply for this cycle (2017-2018). Doesn't mean you can't try you luck, though.

Yeah, luckily I took a gap year to retake a&p classes, and I made an A in the first one and hopefully another A for a&p 2! So did you end up getting into one of the schools?

I'll be applying for the fall 2019 admission!

You also should be studying for the GRE. Here are the average stats of those UTMB interviewed this year:
Overall GPA - 3.72
Prerequisite GPA - 3.80
GRE Verbal - 152
GRE Quantitative - 151
GRE Analytical - 4.1

Thank you. Were you able to get those stats during an interview with them? Also, how heavily do you think the GRE weighs?

Currently waiting to hear back from the schools on their decision! Waitlisted at Tech at the moment, but crossing my fingers a spot opens up and I just interviewed at UTMB about 2 weeks ago, they said they were letting us know by this week on their decision

Hi there. I am sort of in the same boat, perhaps worse off. My freshman year in my undergrad I enrolled as an exercise science major. Due to dealing with a family issue, I failed an exam. Since it was a class that had only 2 exams it was pretty impossible for my grade to come back from this. Since my adviser at the time assumed I would stick with exercise science, she did not tell me I had the option to withdraw, but advised I worry about my other courses instead of applied anatomy and I could retake it later. Due to my experience that first semester of college and the stress of academics, I changed my major and my future career path. I received an F in applied anatomy and never looked back because I did not need that for my new major and did not have any immediate plans for graduate school. Fast forward 4 years later and I am planning to apply to OT school with this F haunting me. Sure, it does not look good to have poor grades on your transcript (esp. one like mine) but I was advised make sure to do well in the make-up classes and to justify the grade in your personal statement. I wish you luck!

Yeah, I think our best case would to just excel in supplemental work! Did you apply this cycle or are you going to for next cycle ?

Next cycle! But yes that is what I am trying to do. My last 60 credit GPA was a 3.7, and I am now taking my missing prerequisites so hopefully this helps. Its all too stressful! Hah

Well I hope all goes well for you! Which programs are you applying to? Maybe it will be better if the programs look at your last 60 GPA? The fact that we are already preparing is a good thing though!

I am applying to SRU, Gannon, Chatham, MUSC, D'youville, and Towson. Perhaps Shenandoah as well but I am unsure as of yet. Hopefully they look past it! I hope things work in your favor as well!
