Hello,

I am an URM Utah resident. I am desperate to apply this cycle for the first time, but not sure if this is the right decision. The main problem I have is my low GPA (3.3 c GPA and 3.0 s GPA). I came to the US as a refugee a few years ago and struggled with school at the beginning as an ESL student. Then I bounced back, retook a couple of classes, and did significantly better at school ( upward trending in the last 2 years of school). MCAT is also low, 501. I did pretty well on all sections except CARS again because I am not a native speaker.

Given my low GPA and MCAT, do I even have a chance for interviews? I was told by the school advisor that DO is an option but I know they calculate GPA differently so I might have a slightly lower s GPA and that is even worse. I am now feeling very furstated and depressed, but I do not want to give up.

The rest of application is decent: Good clinical and non-clinical volunteering hours. Currently working as a medical scribe. 1 year + minor in clinical research.

Even with your URM status, even DO is a high reach for you, given your GPA and MCAT. If you are still interested in medicine, I would enroll in post-bac classes, raise your GPA to ~3.5, and retake your MCAT before applying.
