I simply need help with building/constructing my school list (MD & DO). I know this is bound to happen, but let me say it anyway If your planning to be a negative nancy as in telling me to give up? Not trying to be rude but honestly, I will ignore your response. Also, don't quote this. Thanks, my stats are below.
  • Major: Bio (undergrad)
  • Undergrad GPA: 3.2cgpa 2.8 sgpa, SMP gpa; Currently at a 4.0 and with another possible 4.0 after this semester ends.
  • MCAT: 504, planning to retake in April
  • TX resident
  • URM Male/Black
  • Clinical Experience:
    • Scribed for 1-2 years. I am not sure what the hours for this will equate too.
  • Research:
    • Just started working in a research lab with a focus on diabetes
  • Shadowing:
    • Volunteered/shadowed at a non-profit organization clinic for 2+ years. Lost count of the hours this will equate too.
  • Non-clinical volunteering:
    • Currently, ~40 hours at my SMP but will be within 50-70 hours at the end of this semester
    • More than 100+ hours from undergrad volunteer events.
  • Other extracurricular activities (including athletics, military service, gap year activities, leadership, teaching, etc):
    • Public relations officer for Pre-med society at my SMP
    • Public relations Director/Co-director for a non-profit organization emphasis in an underserved community.
    • Patient/Medical transporter, clerical and On-call volunteer for a hospital at my SMP
    • Currently a Black Student Union Member at an undergrad uni.

Is your program in Texas or are you willing to go outside Texas? I ask because of state residency preferences within TMDSAS if you decide to retain your Texas residency. How is your networking with other current medical students?

My program is in Texas. Ehh , doesn’t matter to me whether I stay in Texas or not.

Actually, my relationship with some of them is okay. Lol though it’s mostly upper class medical students

Please quantify all your experience hours and provide appropriate detail to the clinical activities you claim (what departments were you scribing, your key roles in the non-profit community clinic, med transport, etc.).

How closely is your program director working with you on your application? Have you been able to network with admissions officers, especially within the in-state schools? You're in a strong position with appropriate letters of recommendation from people who will sponsor you (really support you). How much are the upper-class med students giving you insight about how they overcome any struggles in their preclinicals and early clinical rotations?

For the scribe position, I was in the general surgery department. I know it’s supposed to mainly be in primary care but was unable to find a position in that department. For the non profit clinic org, it felt like a medical assist role, such as taking physical assessment(blood pressure, weight, etc) , while also dictating the notes of the physician and occasionally dabbling into the clerical( calling patients, pharmacy, faxing , ensuring the paperwork for next clinic opening is ready to go . Also, I was able to observe the counseling aspect that was provided with the permission of the patient and the counselor involved.

Actually, I am meeting with the program director in a few weeks to go over my personal statement , and etc. should have someone else over look it too?

I am frequent volunteer for the admission office at my school. But I’m sure they know my face , well some of them. I am planning to meet with the rest early March. Not really familiar with other schools though.

For the med students, their responses for overcoming challenges in their program pretty much align with the responses of my siblings,so not really new information that I am already aware of.

I’m not sure if am allowed to do this , but is anyone willing to look over my statement?

Edit: sorry forgot about discussing the med transport role. But basically I am directing/ wheeling the patients who need help get from point A into the hospital to point B. While also being patient advocate that would setting lab tests, pcp visits for patients, etc. I like this position a lot because I’m able to interact with the patients and understand the different culture that come into the hospital. Which also comes in handy when certain situations come into the playing field.

Very good. I'll let others comment regarding the nature of your experiences. Can you give a rough estimate of hours in each clinic (surgery, health clinic)? Rule of thumb is 2000 hours is about 1 year of full-time work (8 hours x 5 days x 50 weeks).

I would ask all my references to read over your personal statement. I'm also sure that at the right time, there will be volunteers on SDN willing to provide feedback on your PS.

I know for sure that it is at 2000 hours, if not more than that for the surgery position. For health clinic/non-profit it is close to 500 hours; it was there for 2-3 years but the clinic was either only opened on certain days or when enough physicians were available to run that day.

I just got an email back from the admission folks at my school. They are willing to go over my PS with me, so hopefully, that helps a bit.

Yeah, I'll see what I can do. Some offices tend to give me the run-around. Do you think it's professional/okay to email them asking for feedback on my PS or application?

Sweet, thanks! Do you happen to know their screening process for these schools? I'm aware my sGPA is quite low and may even get my whole application thrown out before even being looked out.
