Is my dental school application strong/competitive? Where can I improve?
Hello, I am applying this summer to dental schools, and i was wondering if my application looks competitive. I go to college in Michigan with a major in biology and a minor in leadership. I graduate next semester as i only need 13 more credits. Am planning on applying to Uofm, UDM, the dental schools in Ohio and indiana as well as some southern dental schools)
GPA: 3.6
Science GPA: 3.5
I took the DAT once and got an 18 AA with a 19 PAT, 15 QR, RC 21, bio 17, gen chem 18, orgo 20. However, I am taking the DAT again at the end of May, hoping for at least a 20 AA.
Shadowing: approx 400 shadowing hours
Volunteering and Extracurriculars:
- I volunteer at a dental clinic as a DA and have approx 20 hours (and counting)
- I volunteer as a tutor for an organization called Brilliant Detroit, where i tutor the underserved community (ages 7-16). I have around 50 hours and have been working with them for almost a year.
- Me and Another student and are working alongside our proffesor for her research on "the perceptions of social issues in biology courses" we developed and distributed a survey, collected responses, and analyzed the data to identify trends across different demographics, including major, race, and first-generation status. and we are in works of being published.
- me and my lab group had a lab be published my freshman year
- I worked/volunteered at an at-home daycare
- Have a rental business (started last summer) where i rent out bounce houses, chairs, tables, tents and a foam machine
- have 2 TikTok accounts (one with 250k followers and another with 35k) where i post religious content
-in my free time I played soccer in this league where i was top scorer ( but i dont think that matters in my app)
- Planning on going on a pre-dental mission trip to peru where i would assist as a dental assistant for a week. But am debating if it’s worth it.
- I am a member of multiple clubs at my school (pre dental, biology club, first generation)
Other comments:
-I have 4 letters of recommendation: one from my dentist that i shadowed, one from my orgo professor that i had for orgo 1 and 2 and another from my genetics professor who is also my advisor and head of our biology department. My final letter of rec is a committee letter and i have an add-on letter from my research professor, who i also had for gen bio i and II.
- I am also a first-generation college student, also have a responsibiliy to taking care of my little sister(7) and little brother (4), such as taking them to school and picking them up, doing hw with them etc.
- I have a speech disorder (I'm not sure how this will affect my interview process)
I want to apply to udm, umich, dental schools in Ohio and Indiana. What other schools do you guys think I have a chance at?
