I'm ranked middle of my class (@ UT Southwestern), 229 Step I, fair LOR, no research in med school, and good clinical evals but shelf exams kept me from honoring any rotations (most near honors/B+ and the rest high pass/B). I'm applying to 26 programs distributed over the west coast, south atlantic, and TX.

Do I have a good shot of matching, or do I need to take Step II early to improve my chances? Unfortunately, I really don't anticipate doing much better on Step II...I've never proven to be a standout standardized test-taker. The anesthesia FAQ mentions that 229 alone should get me an interview at most place...however, I don't know how accurate that is with this year's pool.

Should I expand/change my geographical preferences given the highly competitive nature of the above areas? Any advice/comments would be greatly appreciated.

You will be fine. 26 programs is definately enough with your stats. I don't think you need to take Step II anytime soon. Just my opinion.

Agree...

You will do fine. Relax and enjoy the interview season. Be honest on interviews and take an honest look at each program. Have fun, and enjoy the journey. Don't forget to take in as much of fourth year as possible.
