I said I wouldn't post one of these up, but I find myself looking for someone that's similar to me in stats, so I think this is really helpful, not only for me but for others that are in the same position as me. With that said..

Academic GPA ~3.25
Science GPA ~ 2.9-3.0

EC's I have enough
Shadowing 80 hours and began work as a dental assistant

Any advice as to what schools I should apply to? I'm on a very tight budget so I'm trying to not apply to schools that I will definitely not get into.

Thanks a lot in advance..🙂

Hi,
I am by no means an expert, but here are some thoughts:

Your DAT score is not bad, but with that GPA you may need to score 20 or 21+ to be on a safer side.

I am assuming that you went to UCLA and are a CA resident from you id name? If so, defintely apply to all the state schools since they may give preferences to resident.

Spend a little $$ and buy the newest edition of ADEA official guide to dental school as the stats from predents.com are quite different between last year and this year. Then look at the stats of individual schools and # of out of states they accept and apply accordingly. Research well and try to apply to less than 10 schools to increase your chances of acceptance.

Also, you did not mention these but I think they may play a role in acceptance:

Whats your BCP GPA?
How's your GPA trend?

Hope that helps.

I'm a new member here so I can't create my own thread yet...Sorry I kind of have to hijack this one in order to ask my question. I am a sophomore at an Ivy with a 3.5 GPA and I was recently placed on academic probation due to my courseload (not due to performance; I had a low courseload first semester and then second semester withdrew from a class). Anyway, I was wondering if like law school you have to include the fact that you were on probation for a semester in your application (or if it is included in the letter from the health professions committee) and how this will effect my chances.

Thanks

Yes, if you were ever put on academic probation/disqualification, you'll have to explain that on your app. If i remember correctly, there is a section under background info that ask if you were ever subject to academic disciplinary actions.

Does this pretty much disqualify me from admission? I haven't finished my dental school admissions requirements yet and I am majoring in the humanities/social sciences so I was considering doing a post-bac and having the letter come from my post-bac school instead of my undergraduate school. If it is self-reported, then it is a nonissue and I guess I will have to report (honesty is the best policy). If I do end up having to report this, do I still have a shot at top schools (Harvard, Columbia, U Penn) or are they out of the question?

Hi,
Again, this is just my opinion.

If you were ever put on probation/disqualification, it is really best to be honest and and put it as stated. It depends on schools, but the probation/disq are actually listed on my university's official transcripts.

Personally, I think you have a decent GPA so that probation due to lack of units will probably not hinder you much. But make sure you are ready to explain the situation to adcoms during interviews though.

Just my 2 cents.

I'm a little confused about how to explain this though in a way that won't decrease my chances. It was a difficult time for me for a lot reasons that have nothing to do with school - a close friend of mine died, then my mother was diagnosed with cancer, and there were a lot of family related things happened that were a distraction. But, what is frustrating to me is that I withdrew from the class after meeting with two assistant deans that never even mentioned that I would be placed on probation due to the number of credit unions that I took that year if I dropped it. They approved the drop. I later found out that it was school policy, but if I had known at the time that withdrawing from the class would have put me under the number of course units that I needed, I would have never dropped it. I don't think my school lists academic probation on my transcript though (FYI).
