I was originally accepted into an accelerated DPT program which would allow me to obtain a BA in Exercise Physiology, and a DPT in 6 years. The Undergrad part of my studies took me three years. I am now considering applying to med school. The only problem I think i have is my GPA. My first semester Freshman year i tanked scoring a 2.498, my second semester freshman year i did a little better but not great scoring a 2.989. the Next 4 semesters my lowest gpa was a 3.515, My cum GPA is around a 3.27 and my MCAT score was a 31N.
I have a few EC, i took a clinical class and was placed in a Cardio-Pulmonary Rehab center for a semester, I also worked in an In patient rehab center for geriatrics and volunteered at a hospital. I don't intend to apply to any top notch schools, but do you think my GPA will ruin my chances to get in any were?

As for now, you have some chances at low tier MD schools like 50/50 . However, if you polish your ECs and have good LORs, I believe your will have a decent shot. Apply early and broadly to increase your chances. Also, if you have not graduated yet, you can take few more (2 semesters) upper lever science classes to improve your GPA. If you can get both your sGPA/cGPA to a 3.4+ , with 31N mcat you will get in somewhere (not 100% guarantee though). If you dont wanna do those stuff, you can apply to DO schools now, and chances are you will get in to a DO school with your current stats.

50/50 with a cGPA of 3.2? I think not.

To the OP, are you finished with school? Your post is relatively confusing

I would say you have an outside shot...like 20% with applying broad and depending on instate...

You need better ECs.....more patient contact volunteering, shadowing, tutoring, research, etc...

Raise the GPA...period....a 3.27 is not good enough...take an extra yr and get it over a 3.4

You need to get on ECs and raise the GPA.....before you apply MD.

DO schools are an option now...

plus, you are going to have to explain why you are leaving a DPT program so you will need to have a strong app...

Well Just to clarify I am in the final semester of my undergrad work, so i haven't really "left" the DPT program. Its an easy course load compared to my last few semesters. I came up with a 3.27 assuming i would do no worse than my hardest semester which was a 3.51. If i apply to a DO school, what are the chances i can get a residency in orthopedic surgery? Seeing that is my ultimate goal. I know i really shot myself in the foot freshman year 😡 But will the upward trend and solid MCAT score give me a shot?

As far as the DPT program, i figure worst comes to worst and i don't get into med school anywhere i can use that as a backup plan.

Completing a Special Masters Program might give you a surer path to getting into an allopathic program.

A DO grad can get into orthopedics, but like MD, it ais a very competitive specialty that requires a competitive Step I score or DO equivalent, honors in rotations, research usually, etc.

Getting ortho is gonna be harder with a DO.....but not impossible...

I would think hard before doing DO then...SMP may be a better option..but expensive.

Well like i said med school is not my be all end all, if i do not get in I am really not looking to make the process any longer, i would just continue the DPT program if i couldn't get into med school.

Enjoy PT school....one should never halfass MD....:luck:

If you dont love it, then you will not be happy later on....it is a lifestyle and not a career or job in most cases....

your missing what i am saying, i am not "half-assing" anything. all im saying is if i do not get into a med school it is not the end of the world, it is not my be all end all. If and only if med school does not work i am lucky enough to already have a seat in a DPT program. i don't see how in anyway this is half assing. If its possible to get into a DO program and still be an orthopedic or even another type of medicine, that's what i intend to pursue. However if it does not work out i don't see the need to spend extra years and money to get in when i have a very viable plan B.

What I am saying is most that want to be a physician will do whatever it takes...🙂

Until you have tried it all in my book, you are not doing it right!

That is understandable, but i was accepted into the DPT program out of high school so for a long time that was my plan. I always wanted to be a physician, but never really liked school up until my first semester sophomore year. I always got pretty decent grades but was never a "good student". Come college i got a real kick in the balls as you can tell by my freshman year grades. The way i look at it i have such a solid fall back plan (DPT) which most people would kill for it as an ultimate goal. If i at least try my hardest to get into med school on my first shot out of college i can deal with whatever the out come is. I mean if i tried for Med school, didn't get in and ended up with a DPT i wont really be in a bad spot at all. If i was not pre-accepted into the DPT i would do anything and everything possible to become a physician, but i already have a seat in great PT program so to me driving my self crazy to go to med school doesn't seem worth it.
