help - my step 1 score is 223. have not taken step 2 yet. got high pass in peds clerkship and high pass in internal medicine but passes in neurology, ob-gyn, surgery, and psychiatry -- not because i failed any shelf exams but because i am too quiet. i want to do a fellowship in peds eventually. i go to a top 40 med school in NYC. what are my chances of getting into a peds residency program that will allow me to do fellowship afterwards?

I think that your chances of "getting into a peds residency program that will allow me to do a fellowship afterwards" are good. Doing well on Step 2 will be a plus- when are you taking it? Most peds residency programs will provide a good foundation for fellowship training. Do you have a particular area of interest? If so, I would definitely look at residencies that have that specialty represented. Most programs have most specialties covered, and the larger programs generally have all of them covered. Even if you wouldn't be interested in staying at that institution for fellowship training, the ability to work with specialists in your area and to get their assistance in networking will be helpful. But you don't necessarily need to do your residency at a "top tier" program to be a competitive candidate for fellowship training.

thanks for your response. im taking step 2 in november -- a little late. hope my step 1 score will still get me interviews. im interested in peds emergency medicine and looking to stay in New York City.
