Hi guys. I want to apply to about 10 dental schools this upcoming cycle. What are my chances at each of the following schools? Are there any that I SHOULD apply to? Thanks so much! God bless.
(I'm a TEXAS resident; junior at a Texas public University)
Here are my stats:
oGPA: 3.64
sGPA: 3.80
DAT: AA 20/ TS 19/ PAT 19
I've shadowed about 100 hrs, and have volunteered at a hospital.

List of schools I plan to apply:

UT Houston (#1 choice)
UT San Antonio
Baylor
UMD - Baltimore
Tufts
West Virginia
LECOM
NYU

im from university of houston, and you need to add more schools for insurance. Maryland is pretty picky on applicants.
To further your cause, it be great if you attended Texas Mission of Mercy; there is an event this saturday at Burnet, TX

West Virginia interviews very late in the cycle (talking about Spring and by that time you'd be accepted)

ADD: Nova, Oklahoma (i got interviewed there), USC, UCSF, Oregon (OOS friendly), Case, Detroit Mercy, Louisville (OOS friendly), BU, VCU (OOS friendly), and UNC (less picky than Maryland)

maybe Michigan?

Thank you for the advice! I go to UH as well, and I went to TMOM last semester in Beaumont. It was a great experience, but I'm not able to go to Burnet.
Have you been accepted to any of the schools yet?
I'm trying to narrow the number of applications I have to pay for, so around 8-10 was realistic for me.
What I'm trying to say is that I can't really afford OOS.

Our stats are almost Identical and I'm a Texas Resident. To give you some advice, I would say to add the Arizona schools to your list. I got into Midwestern, and I'm still waiting to hear back from UTHSCSA so you never know where you'll hear back from each cycle. Wouldn't hurt to apply broadly.

Did you get an interview from Houston or Baylor?
Thanks for the reply

i got into LECOM and Minnesota; Houston and UTHSCSA invited me for Jan (very late even though I submitted TMDSAS in May) this is a perfect example that you should prepare for the worst and apply broadly (adding both Midwesterns and ASDOH is good) because you never know whos gonna accept you first. Im in limbo with Houston and UTHSCSA (baylor rejected me) so hope I get in-state tuition soon.

Not being able to afford a higher education is not an excuse if your passion of dentistry is strong and pure. Its sad that more than half of the dental schools are private and all want money from you.
Ask your family for a loan because applying is a numbers game and LUCK. whoever reviews your app will either recommend you or not depending on your stats and their mood.

For this cycle, I thought I was gonna be interviewed by all texas schools before December but turns out no.. Too much uncertainty is going on and you dont want to waste another precious year re-applying because you will be against another NEW 12,000 applicants. You dont want to fall behind.

you be surprised what school wants u and dont. The schools I thought were safety all end up rejecting me... Ones I didnt expect ended up inviting me. Thats my story

stats for TMDSAS: 3.6 opga 3.5sgpa 20AA 20TS 21PAT 16RC 18BIO 18 QR 25 OC 22GC

i know my 16 RC is hurting me.

UPDATE: If you are applying to Tufts, NYU, LECOM, and Maryland then you should have no problem affording OOS tuition because LECOM is ~85k (only 1st year), Tufts (>100k per year), and NYU (>100k).

I only came up with NYU and Tufts because I heard from a lot of people it is easier to get into, but I see why now... 🙁
Thanks for the advice man! I hope you get into Houston or San Antonio.

Definitely apply to OU. 1/4 of their class is OOS.

Hey aznboi...maybe I'll see you at TMOM?

It couldn't be worse than NYU, and with cost of living being among the lowest of any dental school (I would guess), it's a pretty good place to be. They're also doing renovations, which I believe would be done by the time you entered.

So I will add OU, Midwestern, ASDOH for sure....

Is Nova "Nova Southeastern University" in Florida? And are they OOS friendly?

What do the Texas schools look at more? sGPA? Reading? Science?
