1. usually it's an extra second year position, but without guarantee of hire. Our prelim 2s did all the same rotations as the categorical 2s and were treated the same as the categoricals (there was a reasonable chance they'd get a categorical slot from attrition or lab resident numbers. the prelim interns all knew this, and knew if they were asked to stay another year what their odds were). In some programs, it may almost be a repeat intern year.
