I know nearly everyone on here is psych related, but I am hoping to get some feedback from individuals from multiple backgrounds. I just began my final clinical practicum for my MSW program. I am placed in a med school outpatient psychiatry clinic and have a large caseload. My question is, what is a realistic caseload size? They have filled my schedule with back to back sessions, and I only have an hour a day for paperwork. I feel somewhat overwhelmed, and believe it would be useful to have more non-contact hours to plan sessions, write case formulations, etc. What do you think? Any advice?

Tell/explain this to your supervisor.

In my experience there is great variance among sites regarding the proper philosophy for practicum/internship students. Some places view you as free labor and load you up with cases, other places view you as a trainee and believe you need to be protected from being overwhelmed so that you can learn properly. Did you just start this placement? If so, you may be overwhelmed now but feel more able to manage after you get used to things and feel more confident in your skills. Writing notes quickly, for example, is a skill that takes some time to master. I used to be super slow, but I've gotten much better at "banging em out."

I agree, talk to your supervisor and explain your perspective and see what happens. They may be able to make adjustments. If they don't, remember it's just for a year.🙂
