Hi, I'm deciding between two schools, one of them is the med sch of my own university. I was wondering if anyone could give my their insight as to some pros and cons of attending same school for Ugrad & Med Sch? 😕
Thank you

There are no pros to attending the same medical school as your undergrad (maybe don't have to move), however attending the same residency program as your medical school is definitely advantageous (know the hospital, what to expect, where things are, etc).

There are plenty of pros:
1) Same location, so familiar with surroundings.
2) If significant other, don't have to move/uproot life.
3) Potentially same professors/classes/material as upper division undergrad classes.

Cons:
1) Lack of diversity in education if Pro #3 applies to you.
2) Don't get to experience a different part of the country.

pros for some are cons to others... this is a pretty subjective call...

do you like your city/surroundings? do you like the familiarity? or would you like to go somewhere different? which med school/hospital did you prefer?

there is no objective, definable benefit or detriment to going to the med school affiliated with your undergrad.

best of luck!

In Iserson's guide to getting into residency he claims that it is disadvantageous to attend residency where you went to medical school do to what he calls "the medical student syndrome" or something of that sort where he claims they have a hard time seeing you as a resident since they just had you as a medical student. I don't know about that though, just his claim.

I totally disagree with Iserson on this. I see residents who were once medical students at my hospital having a much easier time than the other residents. The staff has no problem seeing you as a doctor instead of the medical student. They do have the potential to assimilate new information afterall. 😀
