Personally, I hate both Case Files and NMS. I used Lawrence and Recall for my reading.

Question book wise, I liked Appleton & Lange a lot, thought it correlated well with the Shelf.

I just started NMS surgery casebook and it seems to be a detailed version of casefiles surgery. It will be another 2 weeks b4 I can say whether I like it, and many more weeks s/p shelf to say whether it helped. So far, I have not been a big fan of case files because I always felt like something was missing. However, I still have to take FM and peds and I am willing to give casefiles another shot since I don't know of any other texts which a case oriented format for those rotations.

The consensus is that NMS casebook is better. You may want to check both out at the bookstore and get a quick glance before you purchase.

For a reference for MS3, Lawrence is the standard. It has enough info and won't drown you with details. If you are definitely interested in surgery, I would say get Sabiston or Greenfield. Schwartz is available online for free at accessmedicine.

Blueprint Q&A is *excellent*.
