I’m doing a survey and I’d like to find out the usual/maximum PGY(s) for the various Accredited Combined Specialty, Subspecialty combinations, within the following career stages.

(1) Medical Student
(2) Resident
(3) Fellow

Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the help.

I'm not sure what you are asking for. What do you mean by "combined specialty" - Med/Peds for example? Or are you asking how long it takes, at a maximum, to become a Surgical Oncologist or a Pediatric Intensivist?

This would be a very extensive list and most of the information would be available on FREIDA. Maximums are hard to establish because you can spend more time in the lab than others, thereby increasing the PGYs.

Medical school takes 4-7 years depending on if you do the traditional or combined programs.

For example, a general surgery residency takes at least 5 years in most places, 7 years in some places, and maybe even 8 years in others (ie, I knew someone who spent 3 years in the lab).

Surgical Oncology is a 2-3 year fellowship but could last longer if you did more research.

Thanks for the help.
Med school isn't included in the PGY (post graduate years) by definition.

Residency for emergency medicine is either 3 or 4 year depending on where you go.
