What are the MOST & LEAST IMPRESSIVE schools you have visited/interviewed at so far?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Red Sox make me yack. What bugs me most is their pathetic attemp to label themselves as underdogs by calling themselves "the idiots" when they won the series 2 years ago. 🙄 Please, they are the second highest payroll in MLB year after year, right after the Yankees.

Basically, Red Sox = wannabe Yankees. Rich team who just tries to buy championships year after year. Only problem is, they suck at that too

Don't get me wrong, I love Boston. However, Red Sox fans are the most pathetic, whining, and flat-out obnoxious breed of human waste on this planet.

And Tom Brady is the most overrated player in the history of sports.

Sorry to ramble about things unrelated to medicine. Sadly, I'm much more passionate about Red Sox and Patriots-hating than I probably ever will be about medicine...

Agree with this whole post 👍

I think "big and public" should be the mantra. Tertiary care is out because you won't even get to start an IV. (exaggeration) I have family friends at the Mayo, and they all encouraged me to go elsewhere for med school (not saying that I really had a shot at getting in b/c who really knows what they're looking for) because at a world-renowned tertiary care center like Mayo, you'll probably leave having seen things that few people in your intern class will have seen, but you won't get to do much. Really, do you think that someone who flew from Kuwait to have the best care he possibly could is going to let you put in a central line? Heck no. He's going to want the attending who's done 10,000 of them.

I see your point... How do you find out this kind of information about the hospitals associated with each med school?

I think you would have to do it on an individual basis. I'm not sure if there is a compilation of any kind that would list this information.

ok, so a response to a few people...

first, my Case interview was over an hour and a half long with an endocrinologist who would ask a ton of questions out of left field that I had no idea where they were going... "so was your father out of residency when you were born?" Plus, my answers were getting interrupted so she could make comments about her cheesecake recipe and whatnot. I was also there over thanksgiving break... mabye the same day. I also get the impression that Case has no set structures to thier interviews. One of my friends had one where his interview was 45 minutes down to the second and got grilled with ethical quesitons the whole time... another had an easy conversational interview.

as for sports fans... All the northeast fans are horrible, Boston for all the above listed reasons, New York for thier obnoxious false sense of entitlement, but Philly fans are the worst in America. Gotta love the fans who booed Donovan McNabb when he was drafted and cheered when thier own QB was laying injured on the turf.... Makes the shameless bandwagon jumping of Detroit fans seem ordinary.

and as for Brady being overrated... of course he is; he's a Michigan alum. (waits for humble to come in and attack me again)

edit: and something I forgot: Penn has just as much pretentiousness as any other school, including harvard. I loved conversing with one of our alumni/trustees who's a penn gene therapy research guy. I'd never met a professor more full of himself. Of course he did kill a guy in one of his clinical trials and set gene therapy's reputation back by a decade.

That was only about 10 people and not representative of how the city really felt about McNabb at that time. If you are a true Philly fan you would remember that, although the media loves to tell the story differently....

it was more than 10 people cheering the fact that Jeff Garcia was down on the turf... I can tell you that.

alas, the inspiration for my avatar. Klinsi was the lead candidate for the job and was really the only guy that USSoccer was looking at, however he pulled out of the job over control issues (rumored). Since then, the US has a temp coach in Bob Bradley, who's a solid coach, but he's not even full time at the moment since he's still coach of Chivas USA.

Sunil Gulati is president of USSoccer, for the record and reference.

yeah, he's infamous here too with us upper level science majors... He's on the board of trustees and was the keynote speaker at our alumni science conference last year. Sat at our table during dinner.

How do you reckon Tom Brady is overrated? 3 Super Bowl Championships in 7 years. Say what you will about how pretty it looks but you cant argue with the results. That's like saying the surgeon general is an overrated doctor because he didn't goto harvard...blasphemy!

Actually, they won 3 superbowls in 4 years, not 7. This does not change the fact that Tom Brady is, by far, the most overrated player in sports. Clearly. Without question.

Why? Belichick is a phenomenal coach, certainly the best of this (if not any) generation. Scott Pioli is the best personnel manager in football, by far. They deserve the credit for the superbowls. The Patriots' system and personnel are so good, they could have won with practically any quarterback. Tom Brady was just in the right place at the right time. He is a glorified version of Trent Dilfer.

To give Brady credit for these superbowls, or even say his name in the same utterace as quarterbacks like Elway/Montana/Marino/Manning, is a total joke and is blasphemy.

Brady is a winner. Yes, the Pats D was awesome in their first superbowl against the rams... but who led the team to the GW field goal in the last 2 minutes? Tom brady

When they played carolina, they gave up 29 points, so that was hardly D. Oh and who led the team to the GW field goal in the last 2 minutes? oh yea Tom brady

Peyton Manning=loser. Great QB, but 0-4 against rival florida (at tennessee), never won a playoff game against rival NE

Marino=great QB also, never won the big game.

You are definately correct about Montana and Elway, they are better QB's, but you cannot call Tom Brady overrated.

FYI I goto Michigan, hence the utter disbelief

MOST: Baylor ... awesome facilities, faculty, students, hospital affiliations. All in all, my dream school.

LEAST: BU.

I went to undergrad in Boston, and expected so much out of BU, but like someone else had said, for the cost of tuition its facilities are AWFUL. I was so disappointed. The students were blah, and while the faculty is an impressive "who's who" of Research....I hear they are more than lacking in the professor-ing department. I guess that's the case at a lot of medical schools, but here it was quite striking. I was just so disappointed with the tiny lecture halls, the crazy construction in an already construction-ridden Boston, and the small library. Even so, I would gladly go to BU in a heartbeat as I love the fact that BMC is a city hospital and the name is obv great.

Totally wrong. Tom Brady is a product of the offensive system in New England. He is a product of the great offensive coaches (e.g. Charlie Weis, Eric Mangini, etc). That's why he's overrated--if Manning or Marino were in Brady's place, the Pats would be a BETTER team. If Brady took Peyton's place with the Colts, the Colts would be a WORSE team.

And Brady is also a douchebag, pretty boy loser.

The Big Dig isn't going to stop until it hits China. And then they'll turn around and reverse it all just for fun. 😉

Best schools:

University of Rochester is strangely overlooked by so many. I know it isn't in the most glamorous and vibrant city in the country, but their facilities are terrific, their ambulatory-care clerkship that takes place throughout most of the first year and all of the second year is unique (I think) and wonderful, and all of the faculty, staff, applicants and students (including a wonderful student host) that I met were fantastic. I have not felt so good about a school and its vibe anywhere else.

UCSF was good for all the reasons you would expect, and I liked my fellow interviewees a lot, almost as much as those at Rochester.

UNC-Chapel Hill felt like a very solid program with a lot of great new facilities just opened or about to open. I liked my fellow interviewees there quite a bit too, though not quite as much as at the previous two schools. Also, the overall feel when milling about the campus and the neighborhood is that almost-like-highschool feel that can plague big public state schools, even the great ones. The laptop requirement sucks. You have to buy a Lenovo through them, configured by them. It comes with a lot of software that I already have on my own laptop--which, by the way, is only 6 months old and would serve me perfectly well--and costs $2,500. Quibbles aside, I would be thrilled to attend UNC.

University of Washington is fantastic, a solid program with more possibilities than any other regarding clinical experience and scientific research, and better (if not more) opportunities to engage in public service. I can't talk about a first impression because I'm from Seattle and went to UW for my undergrad, but it's a wonderful school.

one time i got stuck in Seattle traffic so I crossed univeristy of Washington off my list. I can't be involved with THAT kind of people.

Brett Farvreereruh is the most over-rated player in football.

Public transportation and cycling, dude, those are the only ways to get around.

And Brady is also a douchebag, pretty boy loser.

I think the name Brady tends to do that to people...

this guy probably agrees with me.

as for the michigan fans... nice job recognizing the star power of your QB there...nothing like denying him a full starting spot to Brighton's favorite son...

Your hatred and angst against the wolverines is unheard of. I've seen more amiable OSU grads. My god, you have to just let it go. U of M didn't want you in freshman undergrad, and doesn't want you in their med school class. It's nothing personal so get over it.

No offense to the football fans who are debating here, but I'm genuinely curious to hear people's opinions regarding the original topic of this thread. I'm especially anxious to know what folks have thought of the following schools after interviewing and touring at them.

Brown
UVN
University of Rochester
University of Washington
UNC-Chapel Hill
UCSF
OHSU

The Big Dig isn't going to stop until it hits China. And then they'll turn around and reverse it all just for fun. 😉

I'm pretty sure they made it to China already! And I think that on their way back they caused that piece of the Mass Pike tunnel roof to collapse. Awful.

Most: Penn like so many others on here. I really loved it there.

Least: there's two here

1. Vandy - my interviewer was not the most approachable person and he wanted me to say that Vandy was one of the greatest schools in the US (compared it to going to Harvard med). It was the first thing I had in the morning, and I was thrown off for the entire day since I had this impression that the entire school was that arrogant. Not saying that the school is, but that's the feeling I took out of it right away.

2. Yale - the day was so unorganized. We didn't get a schedule and then we didn't have someone pick us up for the tour after lunch until someone noticed we were still sitting there. We also didn't get any real information about the curriculum and I felt as though I didn't know anything about the school after leaving. I saw someone at the airport that was in our group, and he said he felt the same way.

MOST: Stanford, Harvard

LEAST: Northwestern, by far. After the interview, I'm shocked that it's even considered a good school. I would go to Hollywood Upstairs Medical College over Northwestern.

I hear the number to call for admissions there is 1 - 900 DOCTORB

.. "the B is for bargain!" haha

random tangent....Dopamine I love your pic! 👍 👍

Thanks!

Mais, la souris est en dessous la table, le chat est sur la chaise et le singe est … est … le singe est disparu!

Best: Emory - brand new med school building opening up for our class.. new 1.5 year basic sciences with a 5 month "do what you want" break before rotations... and Grady is HUGE

Least: UTMB - I dunno.. students were awkard, buildings were ugly, Galveston isn't the most happenin place, etc

What happened during your Case interview? Mine was a little odd, too... one of the first questions my interviewer (a retired neurosurgeon) asked me was, "Rap or hip-hop?" 😕

That is a weird question being that you can't really pit the two against each other in the manner that he was suggesting because they are one within the other. "rap" being a genre of music (more like something you do) and "hip-hop" is a culture ,a way of life so to speak. Rap resides within the culture of hip-hop, therefore you can't really choose one over the other because they are in an emeshed co-existence. But i'm sure you gave an answer that resembled that.🙂

Most Impressed: Mayo
Least Impressed: Temple

Mayo has the best facilities I've ever seen. Temple was in the middle of a ghetto and has one of the largest police forces for a reason... It just looked dirty. Nice big hole in the ground right next to the med school that will be there for the next 2-3 years too. Perfect timing for us 2007 matriculants haha. They all worshipped it too, quite funny.

Best: Ohio State University + SUNY Buffalo

Least: NYMC + SUNY Downstate

"I don't know, they both sound like excellent onomatopoeias."

😎 Thanks for the point of clarification... I guess I'm one of those people who likes what you would call an "eclectic" assortment of musical artists, from French Impressionist composers to Velvet Underground. However, there are two genres that I just don't get, at least musically: country and rap. Still, I will admit that both of them have their share of lyrical geniuses.

I think I got interviewed by that same crazy lady. I saw her smoking after the interview. My nearly 2 hour interview was the craziest and most random thing.

I think I understand why they waitlisted me.

Bump... This is a great thread if it stays on topic..

Duke was phenomenal, in my opinion. Gorgeous campus, nice facilities (lectures are streamed!), very friendly students and faculty, and well....they really sell you on that curriculum.

Has anyone interviewed at Brown? So far only one person has posted interview feedback this year, and the total history of Brown feedback includes only 33 posts. I know that most people enter Brown through an alternate route, but there must be somebody who can tell us something about them.
