a friend of mine in family practice is facing a dilemma. the program has decided not to renew the contract for PGY2 residents who fail to pass step3 before the term ends. this has all been done on a short notice with the residents having barely a month to take the exam while working a gruelling schedule at the hospital. they had previously been forced to take step3 last december after another short notice. only 2 out of 6 have managed to pass so far.
what are the options available for my friend if he fails step3 again?
is there any possibility of getting a PGY3 position elsewhere ?
what are his other options?
