What are the paths to Stroke Rehabilitation / Research?

I have a newfound interest in working with stroke patients and was curious about the various paths available to specialize in this area.

Is stroke rehab usually done by Neurologists and PM&R? Is that it? Which specialists do most of the clinical research in this area?
 
Stroke rehab it done by both neurologists who can do a fellowship in neurological rehabilitation or physiatrists (PM&R doctors) who do an entire residency in rehabilitation research. Physiatrists tend to be more interested in functional issues and neuroplasticity and neurologists tend to be more interested in the basic science of stroke and epidemiology. There is much overlap. PM&R is a great field for someone considering stroke rehabilitation research---an ideal fit. Here are some links about different aspects of the field:
