So, now that I'm 3+ years out of residency, and my kids are semi-self sufficent, I started back up with my other love: Photography. I took pictures all through college for a student paper and the athletic department, and then in my MS1/2 years for the local newspaper (just to get some beer money). During residency, that tailed off dramatically, until our first kid was born, then we took a ton of pictures (but mostly of just her)....I didn't do a ton of photo work again till this past year, when I finally had enough time outside to devote an hour here and there to just getting out and taking pictures. Now, it's a slight obsession, where I go out whenever I can (sunsets, night sky, hunting the elusive northern lights, even here in Rochester, NY)

What else is everyone doing for fun to get away from work? I'm always curious as to what others are doing.....especially because us EM types always get stereotyped as being the adventurous ones!

FWIW, here's my gallery of stuff:

There was a huge solar flare earlier this week.....so I went to a friend's on the lakeshore in Suburban Rochester and camped in their backyard for a bit!!

joined a country club, golf a ton, and travel with my wife.

Nice shots Green. I've gotten into photography myself. Invested in Canon for awhile and used T4i and 6D and have now switched to MFT mirrorless system and using Olympus E-M5 and just ordered the new E-M1. I'm going to convert my E-M5 to a dedicated 720nm IR body.

Nice work! What equipment are you using? My wife is a freelance photographer so I have a little exposure to it.

For me its outdoors. I'm a big martial artist and into tactical medicine, wilderness med. So for time away I enjoy just getting out into the back country. So a little cabin with no access to people is a dream come true for me. It works out well with the wife being so into photography we can combine the two a bit. I'm also really into climbing and survivalist camping.

However as a 4th year med student with a new baby, I'm trying hard to remember actually doing something just for fun. 🙂

Gorgeous photos! I kept thinking "I want that one - no...that one - no....THAT one!"

Don't know if it's FUN but I bought a fixer-upper last winter and we spend our down time (& cash) working on the house. Finally starting to look like something the neighbors don't want to egg on Halloween! But I do long for the day when I'm not debating flooring and paint and patios and lighting.

Perhaps I can find that country road in your photo......drive to a nice quiet spot and just sit and enjoy nature. Now that sounds fun!

Beautiful photos. I'm still a MS-4 but I've been maintaining a list for years of things I hope to pursue more when training is done!

Surfing
Snowboarding
Astronomy
Aviation
Sailing
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Those are the big ones. I don't have the money or the time for most of these, but I manage to log flight simulator hours on my desktop PC and train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu on a regular basis now that clerkships are over.😀

Thanks for liking the photos! My wife keeps asking me why I take so many, and I tell her it's because a) it's relaxing, and b) I've learned so much more about where I live and appreciate all that's around me so much more!

Sony equipment. When I was in college, I shot for the newspaper and the athletic department. I was using Minolta equipment back then (and I'm still heavily invested in high end Minolta A-mount lenses). When Minolta went under, Sony bought the equipment lines and kept the A-mount, so my lenses still work on them. I started back about 18 mos ago with a Sony Alpha A65 (which I loved to death until I upgraded it and sold the body and a lens I hadn't used in years to one of our scribes), and now, since Labor Day, have upgraded to the Sony Alpha A99 (the eqiuvilent to the Nikon D800 and Canon 5DmkIII).

I hear those new Olympus are absolutely amazing. My Sony is an SLT (translucent mirrorless SLR), so I'm mirrorless too. Does great stuff! If you like the EM-5/EM-1, wait till you see the new Sony mirrorless ILR's coming out...Full Frame 36MP similar to the NEX line using the E-mount lenses. They're going to be killer!

Right on. I'm really enjoying it so far. The 6D was amazing, especially IQ at high ISO and speed in low light (with fast glass) was superb but FF is just so damn heavy. It was such a drag carrying that thing around all the time, so I was looking for something more portable which is what got me looking at mirrorless in the first place. The funny part is that I actually had ordered a Sony NEX7 before I changed at the last minute and went with MFT. Trey Ratcliff, one of my fav landscape photographers, had some articles raving about the NEX line and started using it over his Nikon D800 and after seeing some of his results, he had me convinced. Then I figured I'd give MFT a shot vs going back to APS-C and have been pretty happy. So much so...that I ended up selling off all my Canon gear and lenses. I miss a few things but the trade offs were worth it. I've read rumors of that new mirrorless FF from Sony, so will be very interested to see what they have in store. I can't wait to be able to use focus peaking on the E-M1 as I can't do it on the E-M5 unlike the Sony NEX. I want to see what all the rave is about. Good stuff.

My wife and her dad (been a professional photographer for 40+ years) use only Nikon, they are kind of minimalists when it comes to their gear. I believe she uses Nikon D80 for most things these days with D300 as well. Between the two of them they have many of the D series and a multitude of lenses. But they are really into comparison vs perceivable change as far as overkill on pixels, etc. I joke they are camera snobs but they stay away from most mass market productions. When you do natgeo et al I guess you can use what you like.

Out of curiosity anything specific that made you guys choose other than Nikon? I'm pretty uneducated on cameratology but I find it very interesting.

I was heavily invested in Minolta gear in the late 90's/early 2000's (i.e. multiple high end bodies and about 6k in lenses), and when Minolta sold the patents and design/tech to Sony, Sony ended up keeping the Alpha mount (which meant I could still use my lenses!!) when they abandoned film and went to digital. Rather than start fresh, I can still use my high end lenses. The Sony A99 is actually got a better review and had a higher test score from DPReview than the Canon 5K Mark III and the Nikon D800. It was on par with the Nikon D600, but the D600 had such bad issues with focusing and oil on the sensor that they actually came out with a D610 to fix those.

I think that's the same thing my father-in-law went through transitioning from film to digital with Nikon. Maintaining lens compatibility was a huge issue. Does the Sony A99 offer video as well and if so do you actually use it? My wife turns her nose up to cameras that offer video (photog snob like I said 🙂). But I could see it being pretty useful at times.

Yeah, I use it. With a 2 and 4 year old, it's one less thing I have to lug around with me. Plus, it does uncompressed 1080p, so it's a win there too

Picked up a Sony A65 a while ago after our first son was born and we were looking at either getting something to replace our old small point and shoot digital can or just getting a video camcorder. Started researching DSLRs that could do video and figured that would be a good way to go and Sony had just released the A65 and was getting good reviews. I'm certainly no expert but I've been really pleased. Almost went the NEX route but didn't.

I loved my A65, but I do so much low light stuff that I rapidly outgrew it and needed more!

Any other golfers in the mix? I bought myself a new set of mizuno JPX irons with my first attending paycheck. I try to get out twice a week here on the 'golf' coast.

These are all caught in the past month and a half or so. The two browns were caught on the same day... just a few days ago (gotta love fall spawn time). Pike was ~30" and not sure on the smallmouth but it pulled like a freight train, lol! Love me some fishing and it's been a long time since I've gotten to do as much as I have in the last couple of months... Oh, edited for some degree of anonymity, lol!

Not an attending but mizuno mp33's are my weapons of choice. That and Nike CBs when I am sucking (same guy that made old school mizunos designed a lot of the nikes).

I think we would be friends. lol.

Can I hang out with you two?

These days it's a lot of food and booze.

I've also gotten back into seeing live music. I have a group of friends from all over the country that I meet up with at music festivals. Earlier this week I went straight from the airport after Austin City Limits to work.

Well I am still a student and hoping to become an EP.....I am a person passionate about education and teaching, so Probably when I am out of residency I will volunteer at local schools or within my neighborhood to teach young children maths and physics.

I travel.

I don't know if it's an exceptional amount, but it's far more than I used to.

I try to limit myself to one big international trip a year (and Hawaii, Alaska, Mexico and the Caribbean don't count as that one in my mind, which is generally a couple weeks in Europe.) This year has been Kauai, Washington DC, Ireland, St. Augustine, Seattle, my hometown, several beach weekends, and I'm trying to squeeze in a NYC getaway sometime in December. And booked airfare to Italy for next spring tonight.

I run too. Currently training for a pseudo-ultramarathon in January (the Goofy, which is 13.1-26.2 on consecutive days), which is really going to hurt, as I spent waaaay too much time at work and dealing with work, as I'm in administration now.

Oh, and for the record, I'm a Nikon girl. Just have a little D60 and a couple of basic lenses (18-55 and 55-200), but it's generally enough. I rent lenses if I think I need them for aforementioned big trips... had a lot of fun with an ultrawide in Iceland.

I'm taking my talents to your neck of the woods today. My wife's peds conference is there....although the prospect of taki g a 2 and 4 year old to see the Mouse and his friends terrifies me to no end.

Dude; we're headed to see the Mouse today. My first time.

Funny; People build mousetraps. DisneyWorld is a people trap built by a mouse.

Try "The Floridian" the next time you're in St. Augustine, if you haven't already. My wife and I love that place.

Good to know. We have a little B&B that we love in St. Augustine, but always looking for new places.

And the Mouse is much fun - I have annual passes, but I love Epcot even more and it's food and wine festival time. The weather is actually supposed to be cooler in the next few days which will be really nice. I ran yesterday in mid 80s with 99% humidity, and it was pretty miserable. Should be a nice weekend, though!

I think the key with the mouse is to not try to overdo it. It's pretty overwhelming to try to do it all, and it's so expensive, that you want to make the most of it. And really, it's not about the mouse anymore... It's all about The Princesses now. 🙂

Which is why my wife booked lunch with the princesses on Tuesday. Tomorrow is Animal Kingdom, Sat is Hollywood Studios and Tues is Magic.

i got fitted for the mizzuno's last month. they are sick! hitting 2 clubs longer than prior clubs. shaved 5 strokes off scores instantly. i golf pretty much every possible second.

Yep. I picked up 10-15 yards instantly. I didn't get fitted all the way, but had my lie angle adjusted (short man, low hands - needed to be flatter). LMK if and when you're down here near the Tampa area. I'll get you out on some sick courses.

Disneyites: Epcot today for Food & Wine Festival. Will check back in and update. My first time in Magic Kingdom was yesterday. Its great, even in your thirties. Saw 6 year-old kid completely altered-mental-status (the same blank face that the 80 year-old AMS pts have) collide into our lunch table, seemingly completely unaware of where he was at in space. Too much Disney for him, I guess. Also watched as another 5/6 year old spied the Mouse for the first time whilst riding atop Dad's shoulders and completely lose his rag. "MIIIICKKEEEEYY!"

Any countries to hit or avoid would be helpful. Last year Canada had some awesome steak and the Moroccan food was also great.

I was 40 before I made it to Disney-anything. Took my (then 5yo) daughter to DL for Spring Break this year. She liked it alright...I can't wait to go back! Which is weird because I hate "Disney" as a brand but damn if I didn't have a s&^t-ton of fun

Belgium had this awesome potato-leek waffle with a beef topping that was probably my favorite - nice and savory, and I didn't expect to like it that much.

The "vegetarian haggis" at Scotland was a passable substitute for the real thing, although the tatties and neeps were pretty good.

We didn't get to everything, hence the need to go back!

If you have a Chase credit card of any sort, you can get into a special lounge that has free coffee and soft drinks in the AC in the middle of the countries (near the Lobster rolls, across from the stage). Was nice to take a break in the AC as it was quite warm when we went

And before you hit any of the countries, pick up a FastPass for Soarin, the best ride ever.
Should you decide to do Mission Space (the full blown version), bring Zofran. Seriously.

Animal Kingdom was pretty good considering there isn't a helluva lot you can do with a 2 and 4 year old (no Everest, etc). The safari was fabulous, the shows were great and AK is pretty first rate. We did a character lunch at Tusker House which was awesome. Nithing like seeing your kids eyes light ip when Mickey taps them on the shoulder. Tomorrow is a pool day then Sat night is Hollywood Studios! Our Magic Kingdom day is Tues

Last year, by the time we went to the soarin' ride, tickets were booked until like 10PM. My wife and I were walking around the park a little bummed when a random couple walked up to us and said "hey, we can't use our soarin' passes, want 2 for right now?" Score!

I stand corrected: Yesterday was "Chef's Tasting" at Downtown Disney's Portobella with Chef Tony Mantuano. Amazing. The wifey got to meet Chef himself, and pretty much was liquefied on the spot (she has been following his works for about 14 years now).

Today is Epcot. Thanks for the tips; will book "Soarin'" tickets early.

That's funny. My wife and I actually met Robert Irvine at food and wine last year.

Headed back home today. All 'Disneyed-Out'.

Food and wine highlights/lowlights:

1. Lamb meatball from New Zealand stand was great.
2. Italian hot sausage/peppers was passable (good, but I've had better... the wifey makes better).
3. Grass-fed beef slider with hot pickles (from the homegrown-Florida stand) was freaking bomb-diggity.
4. Pierogies and sausage medallions from Poland were also passable (decent, also had better).
5. Margaritas from "inside the Mexican pyramid" were also first-class (not available on walkway of nations, gotta go inside the pyramid).
6. Tacos from Mexico were also marginal; skip those.
7. The leek and beef waffles mentioned in another post above smelled outstanding, and the line for them stretched forever. Didn't get any myself.
8. The middle eastern food I skipped, but it seems like it follows my rule of Middle-Eastern food: 1/3rd of time I say: "Wow, this lamb and spices are amazing!" 1/3rd of the time, I say: "I have no idea what I've just eaten?", and the final 1/3rd of the time I say: "You people eat sawdust balls that have been fried in urine and motor oil."
9. There was a chicken curry just off the start that smelled fantastic, but I didn't get any.
10. Listening to a Canadian bagpiper do his rendition of "Tom Sawyer" by RUSH was great, but also painfully stereotypical.

Everything was overpriced, but you've got to expect that.

Also: Was walking through the "UK" section of Epcot and watched as Disney cops roughed up some @sshole who was being a jerk. Cops had him in a good hammerlock and were dragging him out of the park. Onlookers seemed confused. Thought to myself: "What's the UK without a good pub brawl? It's all part of the show, folks!" Nyuk-nyuk.

My wife and I took our at that time 5, 4, 2 and 6 month olds to see the mouse last year. Was one of the best weeks of my life.

It hasn't been too bad. The Animal Kingdom day was great. Last night, the AAP rented out Hollywood Studios, and the kids had a blast there. My wife has had the rental car, so thank god the house we rented has a pool, or we'd go mad. Tues is Magic Kingdom....that's the real adventure!

appreciate the invite fox! was in tampa this summer for a wedding at innisbrook. got to golf there twice. i'll holler at you next time i'm down there. looks like you're a former toledoian -- and i'm there now. will need to get out of the cold a few times this winter.
