What are you doing This Summer?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
We have a whopping four weeks between M1 and M2.
About 4 people in my class are trying to squeeze a wedding in that time period.
Do people actually get any useful research done in four weeks???
I'm thinking about being a counselor for a camp for kids with DMD. We learned about it in our genetics class, and it seems like a great time with kids who are much less likely to be punk brats IMO.

anyone have good leads on international clinics that are receptive to some medical student help? i'm particularly interested in less developed countries...

Try checking out Operation Crossroads Africa . During my MS1-MS2 summer I went to Uganda with a group of about 8 people through this well-established program. We volunteered in a rural clinic, taught health lessons in schools and got to see the country. A great travel/service experience. I would recommend it highly.

This summer I plan to continue to work on the research I have been involved with since October. I will probably also do some clinical work by volunteering at the student run clinic. Besides that I plan to run a marathon, hang out with friends, read fun books, and enjoy the last real summer we have. 🙂

I am interested in what people think about those 3 or 4 week clinical "preceptorships" for the summer between MS1 and MS2. I'm also at a school where my summer's only 4 weeks long, and I signed up to do one of these, and have until the end of the week to back out. After reading this thread it seems like a few people say they're not worth much - is that the general consensus? I want to spend at least 1 of my 4 weeks traveling, and the thought of spending the rest of my precious month in the clinic is sort of dreary... Thoughts, suggestions?

I'm also looking for something like that - hopefully in Asia... you can check out www.cfhi.org/index - they've got a bunch of programs.. . .has anyone heard of any other orgs that go to Asia?

i might be working at a factory.... not sure if this is a good idea... but... $15-20/hour!

Re: summer research .. i dunno. I live with 4 th yrs who told me NOT to do research. They are both doing EM, which is competitive, but not in the super-competitive category. Cuz honestly, if you are applying to a super competitive (neurosurg, derm) residency, you'll probably have to do a yr of research anyway.

My plan is to learn spanish this summer. I see it as a mix of play (travel) and doing something productive. 4-6 weeks of spanish immersion, then 2-4 weeks of travel in Europe (including spain to practice spanish of course). I want to stay in NYC for residency and most of the patients you will encounter only speak spanish. If and when I want to go into something competitive that warrants research, I'll take off a yr after 3rd yr.

research: i also wouldn't suggest doing research but i've been spending a lot of time digging around my school for something that's not quite wet bench work.

so i've decided to be in addis ababa for a month or so at an aids clinic and then be back in dallas for the rest doing clinical addiction research - interviewing and recruiting drug addicts from homeless shelters.

Trying to figure out what to do b/t my MS1 and MS2 years. Anyone know of something good to do in Europe? I'm looking for some type of clinical experience.

Derm research with plans to publish.

Getting married in July, doing some EM research interviewing patients about their prehospital painkiller use, and getting in some climbing and hiking in the evenings and on weekends. I still don't see why it has to be all or none . . . it is not like you are going to have tons of homework from your research project or anything (even if you are planning on getting published it is not like you will be able to write much before you gather data).
