Alright, so I know that new bc em docs plan on working their entire lives in the ED and nevery burning out. However, in the rare occurence that you do get burned out around 45 or 50 years old, what are you going to do with your life? What can you do?

Please don't say you won't be burned out, or if so then you will retire

Thanks

I'm planning on being part-time retired by the time I'm 50, unless I get burned out first or win the lottery (hoping for the latter).

The issue of burn out has been adressed ad nauseum in this forum. If this is one of your concerns, do a search.

In terms of what I intend to do? international medicine, sculpture, sit my lazy arse on the beach somewhere... the possibilities are endless.....

I plan to whittle away my bedpost, be the "John Holmes" of ultrasound, and play Unreal Tournament 2054 until I code in my captains' chair with my dead cold fingers grasped around my mouse.

(and no my mouse is not my "pet name" for a body part)
Q, DO

I plan to move into a 10x10 cabin in the rural northwest and write a huge manifesto against technology while lashing out at various targets. I hear there's an opening for this.

primary docs want to be surgeons
surgeons want to be cardiologists
Cardiologists want to be neurosurgeons
Neurosurgeons want to be a Cheff.

Obviosly this is embelished and not entirely true. But gives some perspective.

Perspective on what exactly?

What it takes to be a Chef of course. I'd like to see you catch one of those neurosurgeons eating beer can chicken!

One of my best friends is a high end chef (as in "worked directly under Wolfgang Puck for years"). I doubt many neurosurgeons have the qualities it takes to be a chef. Line cook maybe, but the personalities are just too different.

people, you are missing the point. After years of ambition, focus and hard work---you just want to enjoy the simple things in life.

I actually think very few of us are missing the point!

Quinn, are you saying there is sarcasm in this forum? *gasp*

I'm appalled. Don't worry, I wont' tell anyone about 'little quinn.' 😀

And what are you people implying? huh? I used to be a chef. Oh, wait. No I didn't. never mind.

Actually, I dont' intend to wait until retirement to do what I want. That's why I did EM. Cuz I'm lazy and don't want to work to hard.

😉 you'll find me overseas, working 2 months a year in Fiji, and 10 months sailing the pacific.
