I was on our NS service 2 months ago (very early in 3rd year)and so far its the best rotation ive been on (done with Int. med and Peds) BUT its seems like students with interests in fields like plastics or Neurosurg get labelled (by some collegues/resident/faculty) regardless of how much effort or interest one puts into other rotations.

So how would a 3rd year(Interested in Neurosurg) respond to this sorta question without sounding egotistic and without dinging those 'subjective' evals????..and OH....ur gunner collegue sitting next to u knows you enjoyed NS so u cant answer ..em...im not sure yet???

Internal med/Psych/Peds Attending:"What are you interested in??"
Med student:😕.

Hey, I have faced this problem too. I think the best way to answer is to tell them you want to get into the field you are rotation on. I know you have to lie...but it is a harmless lie.

It's like it's actually a bad thing to enjoy neurosurgery. You're either trying to prove something to the world or you're a ''money and power'' hungry bastard. Meh, whatever floats their boat.

How ? I'm stating the common misconceptions and stereotypes I get from some classmates, residents and attendings whenever I get asked about my genuine interests. It gets old quickly, but that's just me I guess.

I wouldn't lie. Just tell them what you're truely interested. It's also good to know what you can learn in that particular rotation that will help you with your future career. I got evals in medical school that said things like "will make a great resident in whatever, although he is leaning towards neurosurery".

Some residents in some specialties so openly hate surgeons. Telling them you want to become one of them, wouldn't that hurt your evaluation?
