What are you currently majoring and why? (college students)
What will you major in and why? (High schoolers)
What did you major in? Why? (Graduates)

I am an incoming college freshman and plan on majoring in Microbiology with a minor in Spanish; the former because of personal interest and the latter because I have learned quite a bit in high school and wish to further develop my abilities as it is a useful language.

Will be dual majoring in Mathematics & Computer Science. Why? Because I love math and computer programming.

What about you OP?

I don't know yet to be honest. I'm leaning towards biology for a major. I took it in high school and really enjoyed it. Especially second semester when we focused on human biology. Microbiology or genetics is also high on my list. Neuroscience seems to focused for me.

For a minor I'm choosing Latin American studies. I've travelled to Latin America before and it was truly an enlightening experience. I also love the Spanish language. +Las mujeres latinas son muy hermosas.

Me gusta español!

Majored in microbiology and community health education in undergrad and pharmacology & toxicology in grad school. Personal interest and job requirements.

Major: Biological Sciences - PreHealth Concentration
Minor: Martial Arts

Why Biology?

It's interesting. I enjoy science courses, but don't like all of the math associated with Chemistry and Physics. Biology allows me to study science without advanced Calculus and Differential Equations. I was an engineering major for almost two years and I hated doing my assignments because it was non-stop math/physics.

Why Martial Arts?

When I was younger I was really into Karate. I gave it up during high school to focus on AP credits and my GPA. That caused me to gain a little bit of weight. I decided to do an Exercise related minor so I could get back in shape while learning nutrition and wellness. Asian Martial Arts appealed to me because I had been involved with it before. It has turned out to be quite interesting. I'm enrolled in Advanced Karate next semester. 😀

going to major in Kinesiology, option in exercise science and minor in nutrition or psychology

right now I'm thinking of math, just because I like it/am really good at it.

Also, I think the thought of maybe becoming a cryptologist is pretty awesome

My brother will be majoring in nutrition. 👍

👍

You can join the dual major club. 😎

Majored in molecular biology. Enjoy knowing how things work and it doesn't get more complicated than the cell. Also figured it would give me a good backup for grad school etc if the whole med school thing didn't work out.

Music because I want to enhance my musical skills so I can play as well as concert pianists.

Probably end up as a Dentist in a Veteran's Hospital playing Chopin for the elderly

In all seriousness though, I really do love music, especially Piano and Violin. Wouldn't want to make it into a full blown career, but I would love to perform on the side, and I feel that a degree in music will take my understanding of musical theory to further heights which will in turn, allow me to be an excellent pianist, which is one of my goals in life... Hopefully attained very very soon 🙂

I'm majoring in neuroscience because it requires most of the pre-med courses in its pre-reqs or core. I wanted to choose a more specialized major than bio, and have a long history of concussions so I think it's fascinating.

I'm majoring in exercise science with a pre-health concentration. I chose it because I want to become an orthopedic surgeon and was intrigued by the bodies response to exercise and injury.

I did a double major in physics and religion due to interest. I also have a masters in materials engineering.

If I could do it all over again I would have double majored in Spanish and statistics. Those two fields are way more useful to me now as a practicing physician than any thing I did in college.

Minor: Martial Arts

This is so awesome. I wish my school offered this.

Major (1st Bachelor's degree) : Ecology & Organismal biology
Why? To fulfill pre-veterinary prereqs, mostly. My early sGPA was also fairly low, so I simply *had* to take upper division science courses to bring it up. I also like ecology, so I chose this option instead of general bio.

Major (2nd Bachelor's degree) : French
Why? 1. I've been speaking French for most of my life, and I love it. 2. I really needed something "right-brained" to counteract all the hard sciences. Too much of one thing and I start to go a little bonkers. It also brought my cGPA up :naughty:
Why a whole separate bachelor's degree and not just a 2nd major? I had the credits. This means that I actually get two diplomas when I graduate this May. I do *not* recommend going for two different degrees unless you are a) insane or b) have a background that allows you to transfer in/magically conjure up those additional credits. A double major is just fine (or even just a major and a minor).

To the rising or concerned college students: what you choose as your major isn't really a big deal. As long as you do well and fulfill the pre-requisites for your chosen field, you'll be okay. Do what interests you, as long as you know that you can be successful.

Either Biochem or Neuroscience but who knows what i'll do after i'm in college.

Oh and forgot to add, i'm also considering majoring in Public Health.

Did just want to point out that statistically it matters very little what you major in during undergrad in terms of your acceptance into medical school. Glad to see you all are picking a variety of endeavors!

Majoring in business administration. The degree can be put to good use about anywhere and provides a headstart for someone hoping to one day be a hospital administrator.

Are you planning on doing MD/MBA?

Nope, I plan on getting my four-year, then moving solely on to medical school. Will look into an MBA some time after that if I still have the drive.

Very cool. My cousin did something somewhat similar. First she got a 4 year degree in lab technologies, then she wanted to more so she got a masters in the same thing. Then she still felt she wasn't at her full potential so she went to medical school. After being an ER doctor for a while she decided to get her MBA. As of two years ago she has the following degrees:

-BS
-MS
-MD
-MBA

She is still a physician, but she has a management position as well.

Commendable and what I hope to aspire for some day.

I will graduate this semester...I am a triple major in biochemistry, biology, and yes, chemistry lol.
i thought i might as well do all three haha.

Oh and forgot to add, i'm also considering majoring in Public Health.

👍 I really like the broader perspective public health gives you on healthcare.

I majored in biology and minored in chemistry. I'm finishing up an MSPH in tropical medicine right now.

I majored in Chemistry with a concentration in Biochemistry. I enjoyed the challenge of chemistry, and it's important in understanding/explaining biological systems.

I'm thinking neuroscience, kinesiology, or public health. I'm also thinking about public policy as a possible major and Spanish as a possible minor. Who knows though, I'll probably change my mind at least once or twice!

I will be majoring in BIology with a concentration in developmental genetics. I'd like to do a minor, but I'm not sure what else I'd really like to study.

Excellent choice. I majored in CS, and the schools that were tech savvy were very interested in having at least a few advanced techies in each school. I would take time out one semester and go to HIMSS conference and Health2.0. If you can get involved with a HIT or mHealth project it will really boost your application.

Good question, my main projected major is toxicology. It's so different yet super cool. The effects of poisons and drugs always caught my attention. I haven't even thought of a minor yet....

I plan to major in Human Nutritional Sciences and minor in Business or Spanish, probably Business.

Kinesiology with an option in exercise science, its what i love, working out and knowing the science behind it.

What:
History (no minors or whatever)

Why:
Why the hell not?

^ too boring to me. Essential, but boring 😉

I'm really good at history class, but I despise it with a passion.

This is actually a great thread.

Can anybody recommend a good Bachelorette to have before applying to Medical School?

I want to become a Radiologist and was thinking of taking the Dual Hons. of Physics and Biology. But apparently they don't look at your Major and just look at your mark so would I be better off just taking Kinesiology?

Cheers,

-Chris.

There is no such thing to have a good major

Major in something you like

I majored in Biochem and minored in Spanish.
