Currently reading Breakfast of Champions and like it so far.
Just finished Outliers: The Story of Success and really enjoyed it.

(Nerd alert) Breakfast of Champions (the book) was the answer to Final Jeopardy on a recent episode I caught. Useless info I realize. Happy New Year.

👍 x infinity and beyond, seriously. He doesn't use quotation marks around dialogue, which is confusing at first, but the flow is impeccable. Did you know McCourt died in July of this year!? I saw a sign in the bookstore over the summer saying 1930-2009 and I almost cried. That's how much I love that man.

You should feel special because I bought Angela's Ashes today due to your suggestion. I used a gift card I got for x-mas.

I figured we had the same taste in books, due to your other comment. I will let you know what I think.

Just finished "Water for Elephants" by Sara Gruen. I really enjoyed it. Makes me not wanna get old.

Mountains beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder.

👍👍

I'm currently on Angels and Demons BUT the one book that I truly enjoyed this summer and would recommend to people of all ages is Water for Elephants Seriously, pick this one up =]

On a different note, someone mentioned Three Cups of Tea (I have a signed copy, the author came to my school =), and I loved that one as well... hope that helps =] If anything, go to the library and judge a few books by their cover haha it works for me 😉

Yeah, just finished this too. SO. GOOD.

Can't wait to pick up the sequel (Mount Misery).

Didn't have this at my local library. I either buy the book or borrow from friends and haven't checked out a real novel in years, but after the holiday season, I need to tone down my spending.

I do. Immensely. I would feel bad if you didn't enjoy it. On the other hand, my copy disappeared some time ago, so you know who to give it to if things don't work out. 😉

(I think that's the first time I've used a winky face. It feels weird. I don't think I'm using it again for a while.)

Should I read Kite Runner or reread House of God? Maybe Kite Runner first then end with a smile with House of God. I can't decide. Someone help me out pronto so I can start either one tonight.

It is good so far. I have been having some financial issues and they don't seem too bad now...

The Kite Runner was a good book. I actually have the sequel A Thousand Splendid Suns, but have not started it yet. Has
anyone read it? I think I read the former in about two days, it is a fast read.

I am reading Dawkins' The Greatest Show on Earth. I'm stuck in the speciation chapter because I just finished a course on evolution so I'm kind of burnt out on speciation methods...

I am going to pick up Hitchens' God is Not Great pretty soon because I just read Harris' Letter to a Christian Nation. Good stuff.

haha yeah, I'm only on chapter 5 but it's like jesus, Vonnegut let's get to the cereal already!

Man, I love Vonnegut! But I've only read Slaughterhouse Five and Sirens of Titan. Should I pick this one up next?

Lessee... What good books have I read this year?

- The Spy Who Came in from the Cold by John le Carre
- The entire Sandman series by Neil Gaiman, but that's a comic, so I dunno if that counts
- The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoevsky <---Best book I ever read.
- Notes from Underground, also by Dostoevsky
- Body of Lies by David Ignatius

Also read a bunch of other books too that I can't recall atm, or weren't good enough to suggest. And lots of short stories.

Books I've recently read, am reading, or think you should read:

The Virtue of Selfishness by Ayn Rand
Better: A Surgeon's Notes On Performance by Atul Gawande
The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell
A Case of Need by Michael Crichton
Next by Michael Crichton
The 4 Hour Workweek by Tim Ferriss
The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey
Strength In What Remains by Tracy Kidder
How Doctors Think by Jerome Groopman
The Truth About The Drug Companies by Marcia Angell

I absolutely loved this book. I will say that it did sort of change how I view the pharma industry though...it opened my eyes to a lot of things that I did not know.

Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

Just started Book 2

Finished Kite Runner. I think I would put it in my Top 3 now. The details in the beginning were well-woven later into the story and I appreciated the historical backdrop. I sniffled my way through the last 100 pages.

Spoilers in white:
When Rahim Khan told Amir something like "I think you know who Hassan's real father is" I thought he was implying that he was the father and then I flipped the page and was like, Oh shiiiit no he's not. And of course there's a happy ending, but it makes me sad that most stories in real life don't have happy endings.

I thought it was a great book, but I was a little disappointed in the ending. I was just expecting something a little different. I think I just didn't want it to end.

Yes, I've read both. The Kite Runner was just amazing - everyone I've recommended the book to ended up loving it. A Thousand Splendid Suns is still very good - some critics said it was better than The Kite Runner, but I disagreed.

A Thousand Splendid Suns is still really good though, but MUCH sadder (hope you don't consider that a spoiler). I think if you enjoyed The Kite Runner, you should read A Thousand Splendid Suns.

Oh I'll definitely read A Thousand Splendid Suns. I think I'll read something less heavy and then that book.

Go read A Thousand Splendid Suns. Khaled Hosseini has the power to make grown men cry.

I don't doubt it. I think that's the mark of a great writer, if you're able to make your reader emotionally-attached to your story and characters.

Just finished reading the Bible. Working on Beyond Belief by Elaine Pagels, The End of Faith by Sam Harris, and also reading the Qu'ran and just started the Tao Teh Ching!

The Foundation trilogy by Isaac Asimov

So true. That is why I like John Steinbeck so much. He as the master of character building as far as I'm concerned. I also think that some people are naturally more empathetic, even in the fictional sense.

I read A Thousand Splendid Suns in the summer for my AP Lit. class, and I loved it! I just finished Brave New World, it was an interesting read. It really makes you think about what exactly is a perfect society. But my two favorite books are still East of Eden by John Steinbeck and Power of One by Bryce Courtenay.

I just finished "Ender's Game" by Orsen Scott Card. Even though its listed as Sci-Fi, it definitely is more about human issues with the characters, and the sci-fi plot is just a setting. I loved it!

I read that book back in middle or high school and it is still one of my favorite books. It's awesome.
