What do u guys do outside of the medicine/health care field (outside of research and volunteering at a clinic/hospital)? What makes u a well-rounded person?

Just curious about what type of extracurricular activities everyone is involved in.

I run (hope to do a half marathon soon), lifeguard, babysit, volunteer with the Boys and Girls Club, and am a conversational partner for a guy from Japan.... Also, I watch TV and eat cheetos, but I'm not sure that makes me all that well wrounded...

I am very active in my fraternity: have been treasurer, vicepresident, philanthrophy chair, and scholarship chair

I also divide my time up with campus organizations like Tri-beta and SWCS in addition to the AED.

I do things like a camp for children with cancer, play intramural sports, been on the SGA senate and cabinet, and various things in the community.

But, most importantly I just did everything that interested me. Granted it looks like a lot, it really did not bog me down cause I enjoyed all of it. And thats what is important, is that you just have a good time in college.

Also, If the interviewer were to ask me about any of these things, I could talk about them for at least 15 mins. Some of the medical stuff for hours. Thats wants important, if you can express these to the people interviewing you.

hey!
when i was in college i played 3 varsity sports, did sga, and was active in my sorority. This combined with the fact that I studied such a broad range of subjects (liberal arts college) actually raised an eyebrow at one of my interviews. The interviewer asked if I really knew what I wanted to do, because from what he could see on paper I was all over the place. I mean, I did what made me happy, but maybe I should have focused my efforts more.

Well, if you're not careful, watching TV and eating cheetos could certainly make you more well "rounded." 😀

I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who likes to veg on the couch...do you guys ever get the feeling that everyone is busier and does more important things than you do?

no kidding.

Resident Advisor (and all the volunteering and programming that comes with it), Intermural Sports, Racuqetball Club, Weightlifting, Safewalk volunteer, building up a couple of musclecars, Shadetree Mechanic, and building computer systems takes up most of my time. But this MCAT semester lots of stuff got put on the backburner.

I don't count clubs like Pre Med clubs, Honor Societies etc. because nobody is really dedicated to them - they are just there for resume filler.

Only a few, but I think they are quality, long term things:

-basic, translational, and clinical research nearly every semester and summer in undergrad, constantly during grad

-spent time seeing patients in a county hospital's tobacco depdendenc clinic as part of my grad school requirements (not sure if this is technically extra-curricular)

-Boy Scouts (troop, council, and district levels at various times), for 3 years in undergrad and all during grad

-hospice volunteer, for all of undergrad and grad

-computer addiciton. Worked part time as an IT consultant to a small company, built dual CPU water-cooled computer, etc.

-wedding planning (ug!)

I'm 28 years old, out of college for 7 years, and two of my interviewers STILL asked me specifically what my college extracurriculars were. AFTER discussing everything I do now (work full time, post-bac part-time, ER volunteer, EMT vounteer, read (we discussed favorite authors), knit, run, bike, and take swing dancing classes). I straight up told her I couldn't even remember what my college EC was like, all I remembered were classes and theater work (I was a drama major first time around).

She laughed. And I got in.

Banging the bishop, waxing the tube, flagging the dolphin.

the usual, same old same old.

Going on SDN is my EC....my only EC.

I'M A SHOE-IN!!!😀

Full-Time:

Crack addict, drug dealer, prostitute

Part-Time:

Alcoholic

Yes! I do feel like everyone else is more "well rounded" then myself. My EC's are taking 17 cr hours, studying, trying to stay afloat and not shoot myself, working 15-20 hours a week, and doing occassional things at church.
At this rate, I'll never get into med school!! haha

Working full time pretty much drains me dry. I tutor once a week. I'm doing far less now than when I was in college. Then, I tutored once a week, and was involved in a couple of clubs (president of one). Nothing much more than that though. But everything I did I did for a pretty good length of time, which I think helped.

I'm hoping to maybe do some volunteer work with a couple of different outdoor/conservation organizations this spring.

Other than that, I'm just trying to catch up and watch all episodes of the Sopranos
