I did a search this morning for dental offices in my area and there were probably close to 200 corporate offices. Just wondering your thoughts on working for a corporation vs opening/buying your own office?

Working for a Corp:
Consistent pay, normally high pay
Pay off loans quicker
Good benefits

Cons:
Work like a dog
Often bad dentistry
No equity

These days working for a corporate operation is were most of us are going to start our career.
How long you stay there...
...That's up to you.

Depends on your stage in your professional career. Can't comment on those just entering the dental field. But for those of us at the end of our careers ...Corp was my 1st and only option. After being a private practice owner and BOSS for 26 years .... there was NO WAY I was going to work for another orthodontist or dentist. NO WAY. #ego. Quite frankly ... I was genuinely curious about Corporate dentistry.

I have bosses at Corporate, but it's different. They don't bug me. The patients are different. They don't complain as much. I work PT with say on the days I want to work. Is the equipment great? No. Is the staff well trained? No. Do I sometimes work through lunch and stay after work for an extra hour? Yes. The pay is adequate for my needs and the bonuses keep me motivated.

As for quality of the treatment. It's only bad if YOU allow it to be bad. YOU are the treating doctor regardless of the pressure placed on you. I currently treat my ortho patients no differently than I did in private practice.
