So I got a gift certificate for graduation to a local bookstore. I was thinking about what to buy and am thinking of using toward a book that will be helpful during medical school. I'll be starting in the fall and I know I will get books then, but what I'm thinking is some sort of supplemental or optional book that may have helped those already in medical school. Any suggestions?

Iserson's guide to getting a residency is an interesting read and it never hurts to start early.

Otherwise- Moore Anatomy is a good reference.

Other generally great books to read War Hospital by Sherri Fink, The true story of MASH by Otto Apel.

I would advise that you try to find out what books are recommended by people who go to your school.

I personally really like Bate's Physical Diagnosis book. I have used it through three years of medical school and believe that I will find it a valuable resource through my last year of school and residency.

You might also consider getting a good Anatomy atlas, such as Rohen's Color Atlas of Human Anatomy. It has cadaver pictures in it and I found it very useful for Gross Lab.

I would second Rohen's if you want a book that is going to be directly beneficial to your learning but I would also second Iserson's as a book that will really benefit you as you start this journey.

Having a copy of "FirstAid for USMLE Step1" never hurts...it's a great book and it'll probably be dog-earred by end of first year if you use it right.

I'd also consider Talley and O'Connor's Physical Exam book, that's a classic and will teach you alot of useful concepts about physical diagnosis and internal medicine at a level that's easy to read.

You have no options but the books that are here. They are WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED!
