Hey all. This is a question to everyone, but current med students in particular. I'm starting school in the fall (actually, two months here, holy moly!), and I'm currently packing up all of my books, both science and MCAT review. And I'm wondering, what would be usefull to me next year, and what is useless? I highly doubt I'm going to have to be able to look up the definitoon of centripital motion or Wittig reagents, but you never know. What did y'all take, what was usefull, and what will just clutter up my space? Oh, and are these Kaplan "Basic Concepts" books which they market to beginning med students usefull, or a waste of $$$$$$???????? Please let me know, thanks!

i dont think you need any of those books. jalby had a post on here that talked about books you should get for med school that would help you in your classes and ultimately the boards. so you should look for his post.

my friend who is a soon to be ms2, didnt really buy anything till he went and just found out there what the school recommended.

I was wondering the same thing. Basically, should I bring my undergrad gen. bio, chem, orgo, and physics books or would that just be clutter (I'm leaning towards clutter). I think I will bring my immunology and biochem texts though. What about notebooks (I was a crappy notetaker throughout college)?

i'm gonna bring the Kaplan Board Review books since someone gave them to me anyway and then some of my novels i enjoy reading...though i won't get to it probably. I'm also gonna bring over my subscription to Esquire and my xbox.

Anyone know of a good medical dictionary or review books (ex: biochem) that would be useful for quick reference???????????? Oh yeah gotta have the Mercks Manual and the PS2.

I had a concern about BIOCHEM since I didn't take it during undergrad. One student in a post-bac program told me that Lippincott's Biochemistry Review was essential and better than most med school texts. So I bought a used one online really cheap. I've been looking over it here and there. Its well illustrated and breaks things down pretty simply. A medstudent told me Lippincott's was great too.

Anatomy = Netter Atlas
Biochem = Lippincott
Histology = Wheater Atlas
Physio = Boron (too complicated), just get Guyton
Neurology = Watson

If you have these books great, but if not don't worry about it. Your school may use different books. I honestly did not use books for the 1st year, except for Boron Physio book and the atlases. The reason being was b/c the teaching was horrible for phys and it was the one being used. We are not using Boron anymore and will go back to Guyton. I would recommend not bringing anything with you and wait til you get the required text lists. Check out half.com, buy used. Some "required" books you will not even use. That is why I say wait. Lippincott is great for Biochem, and you will undoubtedly use Netter Atlas (it will be your best friend).
