Hey all.

I absolutely hate research and would like to avoid it, but I do have 4-5 co-authored publications in IM/ medical education related topics.

I was also fortunate enough to obtain a 262 on step 1.

I was wondering what specialties would be open to me. For example, is it worth trying for derm or IR without additional research in the respective field, but WITH an away rotation in it?

Basically I wanna know what's achievable without additional research so I don't end up wasting time or money.

Thank you!

Your step 1 is amazing and would be great for any specialty.

Dermatology and IR are both interesting fields because they really want to see specialty dependent research. IR is super broad so a lot of things could count. But both fields want to see specific research and it would likely be a disadvantage to have 0 publications in the field you're applying for.

5 pubs is a pretty good start and if you continued research into any of the competitive fields, you would probably do very well.

I would recommend against stopping research entirely if you're applying to something like derm/IR/SurgSubs

Thank you, I will look into IM subspecialties as you guys said. Am I competitive for higher up IM programs with what I have now?

It just sucks having the potential to do something competitive but being super lazy to put the work in for it haha.

You are competitive for anything, if you're applying to something like Derm or IR though you would just need to convince them of how you changed your mind given that your research seems to indicate an interest in IM.

This doesn’t make sense to me. What do you want to do? This should be the number 1,2 and 3 factor in your decision not your step score. Ie if you want fm or IM or ent or nsgy or Derm or space medicine (I hear it’s 280+ though) you should go for it. You won’t necessarily be happy if you choose a specialty based on how well you scored on your steps

I think that's the point: I don't know what I want haha. I guess as I continue third year I will hopefully narrow down my interests.

Thank you all.

Interest in procedures?
Do you like surgery?
Patient population? Young old, all ages?
Interested in outpt practice primarily or both or inpatient only/mostly
Does work/life balance matter?
Patient interaction? Minimal, or a lot?
Salary important? Academic or PP options

Consider these factors and it’ll help you decide on a specialty. Also if you’re still in 3rd year you have a lot of time and no one is going to be able to decide for you. Find something you really enjoy and try and do electives if you can

At this point if you even get an abstract demonstrating interest in one of those fields (+pubs you already have demonstrating you can do research and take a project to completion), you should be fine. Dont just do GI or cards bc of the research you currently have
