Hi.
I got destroyed in the first semester in my community college..
Although I have gotten A in General Psychology and B+ in Writing I,
I got C in "precalculus" and C+ in statistics... ended up in 2.9 gpa.

I was less than one point away from getting an A and B for writing and statistics classes which would have been approximately 3.5 GPA but my professors are refusing to round it up... Now I lost my scholarship for the next semester and I cannot be on the honor roll..

Let alone my GPA and scholarship, I realized I suck in math, I'm worried about the upcoming calculus I and II classes that will be detrimental to my gpa..

What should I do? I checked out bunch of calculus books from library and starting to work on it but once the spring semester starts, I won't have time to focus only on calculus..

Sorry about your scholarships lose but don't feel discouraged. It's only your first semester in college, you can easily raise up your GPA. As for calculus, I wouldn't worry too much about it because calculus is fairly easy once you get the idea of derivative and integration. Good luck and work harder mate

I wouldn't say you "got destroyed" but I would be more concerned with your lower grades in the science courses than your profs not rounding up. Life doesn't give you hand outs and you have to learn to live with the cards you're dealt at times.

Do you know why you didn't excel in pre-calc and stats? Too little studying? Studying the wrong material? Going out too much? Stress?

Try to maintain a positive attitude as you encounter your more difficult classes. Don't let school decide for your future and let yourself become a sitting duck for failure. Instead do what I did. During my early CC years at MDC I thought I was doing great until I let go of hours in my job to pursue a full-time school schedule. That semester I earned a B in Cal 1 and C in Chem 101. I pushed on and overhauled my study habits, mentality towards the material and even chose a different teacher for Chem 2. Lo' and behold I earned an A for CHM102, and Orgo 1 and 2 (though orgo were different teachers than chem2).

It is possible to do it. For chem I studied conceptually and removed some of my memorization habits I had from the easier courses. Most of the time the teacher is just a guide and you may need to find resources outside of the classroom to give you the edge during exams.

For Chem and oChem I suggest you check out http://www.freelance-teacher.com/

For Math (calc included) try patrickJMT.com

These two guys are wonderful and their youtube channels allow you to go back to basic stuff if you need a refresher. During finals these guys are life savers for that reason.

Remain positive, and truly find out what worked for you and what did not. Ask yourself if you really put in the effort required to do well. Utilize resources around you to improve your grades.

Remember, never lose site of your goal. Good luck!
